Cancer New Moon Solar Eclipse, July 11, 2010

I keep looking at the chart for the New Moon in Cancer on July 11, 2010 12:40 PM PDT and what pops out at me is there are two very different messages to be found: One from the New Moon tightly sextile Mars in Virgo and the other dealing with aspects to the cardinal T-square.

The New Moon at 19° 24” Cancer is a solar eclipse, always good for drawing attention to any and all issues of the sign involved. This time around we will be getting a refresher course on all things related to the fourth house and Cancer. Home, family, our mothers, our “roots”, those who share our homes, our ancestors and the dwelling we live in.

Mars in Virgo sextile to this powerhouse suggests it is a good time to tend to the many small tasks most of us have been putting off regarding our homes. You know . . . fix the leaky faucet, mow the lawn, take time for our children (if you have them), decide what color to paint the living room, etc. Both Cancer and Virgo are low key, private signs and much better at working quietly by themselves.

Then there is the cardinal T-square. Welcome to the fast lane! Uranus in Aries, newly retrograde, is conjoined Jupiter in Aries, both squaring Pluto in Capricorn and opposing Saturn at 29° Virgo. All are aspected by Mercury in Leo, Venus in Virgo, Neptune in Aquarius and last but not least, Chiron at 0° Pisces.

An interesting pattern is created with Mercury in Leo semi-sextile Venus in Virgo with Mercury trine Jupiter-Uranus in Aries and Venus trine Pluto in Capricorn (Jupiter-Uranus sq Pluto). The potential here is for the earth signs (Virgo and Capricorn) to battle it out with the fire signs (Aries and Leo). The fire sign contingent is leaping to conclusions as fast as it can while the earth signs are demanding accountability and more attention to details. This could get very ugly very quickly.

There has never been a time when it is more important to make sure everyone clearly understands one another. Are we saying “apple” but what we mean is “orange”? Mercury in Leo is noted more for grand presentation and less for precision. With Jupiter-Uranus yelling ‘go for it’ in the background, we could end shouting at each other only to find out after the fact, we were of the same opinion in the first place. A good rule of thumb is to double check your facts BEFORE throwing yourself into the fray.

Venus in Virgo is also opposing Chiron in Pisces and both are favorably aspecting Pluto in Capricorn. On the surface this is pleasant but with Pluto on board it is best not assume anything. Pluto has a knack for hauling dirty laundry to the surface and Chiron will help with this. Acceptance and forgiveness are the tools needed here because ignoring our less desirable traits and pretending they don’t exist is so not an option.

It is also important to note Venus is inconjunct Jupiter and Uranus in Aries. Aries just flat drives Virgo ‘round the bend with their need to dash on to the next project without finishing the last one. Frustration levels everywhere are being pushed to their limits.

We are a couple of weeks from Saturn moving into Libra on July 21 and my intuitive sense is those who rush to judgment under the current influences will be very unhappy campers when it does. As Saturn pulls away from the inconjunct with Neptune in Aquarius and the fog lifts, reality returns.

The Sabian symbol for 20 Cancer is “Venetian gondoliers in a serenade”. While a romantic interlude is wonderful for relaxation and feeling pampered, keep in mind it is an interlude and thus has little to do with daily life. I see a connection to the semi-sextile between Mercury in fun loving Leo and Venus in more abstemious practical Virgo. When the Sun moves from Leo into Virgo, we often find ourselves cleaning up after the party . . . the natural transition from the pleasures of the fifth house to the workaday routines of the sixth.

All in all a tricky lunation to navigate and patience will be required to emerge with as little damage as is humanly possible. Lately I have felt more and more like I’m standing still in the center of a hurricane, with friends and family swirling around, dashing in and out of my life. These must be the “interesting times” referred to in the Chinese curse!

Today’s the day to write New Moon Abundance checks! Just in case, here’s the link to the “how to” page. :)

Are we saying “apple” but what we mean is “orange”?

LOTS of that going around. Sheesus.

Hee-hee. Speaking of apples and oranges, we sometimes call our puppy “orange” when her name is Apple :). Yes, we tease her. Guilty as charged, but she loves it!

      Hey Deb,

LOTS of that going around. Sheesus.

Good to know someone else is seeing this too. It’s shaping up to be a long, hot summer . . . :)

Thankfully dogs don’t care what we call them as long as it’s done in a warm, loving tone!

I haven’t really noticed a lot of the dramatics that have been discussed with the cardinal t-square, though I’m wondering if Saturn is just waiting to move in for that opposition with my Sun to really kick things off.

You mention the earth signs battling with the fire signs – I’m interested to watch how this progresses in my Leo Sun-Capricorn Ascendant mother. ;) Not to mention my own Aries Sun battling with my Capricorn Mars!

    • Diane L

      Hi Nic,

What I’ve noticed with the T-square is when change hits, it can be very fast and something unexpected . . . typical Uranus stuff. :)

Generally Saturn op one’s Sun is more about feeling others are blocking your efforts to move forward. Is your Sun early degrees in Aries? The longer I work with transits, the smaller orbs I use (0-3 degrees).

My Sun is at 8 Aries, so still a bit outside the strongest effects. My Mars, which is pretty significant in my chart, is at 0 Capricorn, so I’ve anticipated feeling that a little stronger. I have felt the “inspiration” of the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction that’s been discussed, but Saturn has left me alone so far.

Mars is soooo happy in Capricorn! Great placement for an Aries Sun. My Aries hubby has Mars in Scorpio, equally good.

A couple of things regards your Mars in Cappy: one being Saturn probably won’t bother much since it rules Capricorn, and secondly, this Mars is very controlled in expression. In other words, not all thoughts are translated into action. :)

Ha, it’s incredible – I actually do have a measure of self-restraint. ;) The more I study astrology, the more things come together. For years I read about the impulsiveness of my Aries Sun, but discovering my Gemini Ascendant and the subsequent effects of Mercury in Pisces – and Mars in Cap – has sort of crystallized a lot of things about how I present and express myself (particularly the ambivalence). Although it all, somehow, comes back to my Aries ego-centrism since I’m far more interested in studying my own chart than anyone else’s.

well, while the rest of the country swelters in the heat, we have Tropoical Depression #2 in the GOM and it’s been nothing but rain, rain, rain for us. So a rather literal application of Cancer as a water sign.

I’ve had 11″ since last Tuesday and probably 2″ more overnight. My garden is FRIED. Hasta la vista, baby. And I wore my hoodie/jacket to work today because 1) it was POURING down when I left the house and 2) it’s COLD at work.

Oh, well, I’m starting to learn how to spin, neith. How much yarn does 4 oz of roving make? It doesn’t seem like much. I’m going to start with a spindle. Work my way up to spinning wheel.

LOL! It’s now hot & dry here. You got more rain in the last week than we get ALL YEAR! (8-13″/yr)!! No wonder your garden went south . . . :P

Why is most work places have their AC set so cold, the workers have to wear sweaters at work? Makes no sense to me. Makes it just that much harder for the body to adjust.

Roving is great for beginning spinners to use. Did the person you bought it from suggest dividing the roving into smaller portions and then gently pulling on it to loosen the fibers? And the finer the yarn, the more yardage per oz. ***grin*** Have fun!!

Okay so then the eclipse is going to be at 12:40 pm right. If it is then ok then but i have one more question okay here it is how long does a eclipse last ?
i ask this question because i have church on Sunday from 9:30 to 1:00 and i really want to see the eclipse and i can’t skip church because it is really important to me so how long does it last? do you know?

    • Diane L

      Welcome Alyssa,

Since the eclipse is only visible as such over the South Pacific Ocean and the tip of South America, chances are you would not be able to see it this time. I have only seen a couple of partial eclipses in my life time and one total eclipse. They do last quite some time and are very dramatic.

Lynn Hayes, Astrological Musings, has a post on why one need not fear eclipses I like very much. 10 Reasons not to worry about the July 11 Eclipse

I got 3 more inches yesterday while I was at work. squish, squish, squish. Doesn’t this seem just about right for Cancer? Always the DQ. It’s not raining today. woo.

I’ve actually ordered a spindle kit from Louet which comes with some practice roving. But on Etsy and Ravelry, I noticed everything seems to be 4 oz for roving. And I got my little book “Start Spinning: Everything You Need to Know to Make Great Yarn” and it did mention that.

And THEN I took Lee to the yarn store today and she has fallen in love with shetland lace shawls. So I’ll be giving that a go soon.

I am determined to learn every ancient agricultural artform known to mankind…spinning, knitting, quilting, cheese-making, beer-making.

I think I subconciously expect there to be a terrible EVENT (of unspecified origin) that will require me to be able to make everything myself. Now, if I only knew how to roof. I had a terrible leek in the downstairs bathroom and the newly painted ceiling had a giant bubble of water that I ended up draining by stabbing it (over the bathtub) with a knitting needle.

Oh yeah! Knitting lace shawls can become an obsession. Once you realize most knitted lace is essentially variations of yarn over & knitting two or more stitches together, it’s fairly easy to keep track of what’s what. :D

I am determined to learn every ancient agricultural artform known to mankind…spinning, knitting, quilting, cheese-making, beer-making.

Huh . . . this I understand! Have dabbled in all but beer-making though I did attempt to make chokecherry wine in my misspent youth with dubious results.

Now, if I only knew how to roof. I had a terrible leek in the downstairs bathroom and the newly painted ceiling had a giant bubble of water that I ended up draining by stabbing it (over the bathtub) with a knitting needle.

EEK!!! Call a roofer ASAP! As you know water seeping in behind the walls and ceilings creates a perfect breeding ground for molds. eeeeuuu!!!

We did try growing leeks a couple of times but the stupid things kept wanting to go to seed on us.

  • casey31652

Make that a leak. hee. I didn’t grow any leeks.

The eclipse falls in my 7th House…I feel very perplexed about it. Right now Pluto is square my Venus and I’m thinking a lot about my love nature…

    • Diane L

      Hey Christy!

The eclipse falls in my 7th House…I feel very perplexed about it.

As a general rule of thumb unless the eclipse is closely aspecting a natal planet or Angle and is just sitting in a house, the affect will be less. In the 7th, you might find yourself thinking about relationship issues in broad terms. Besides, this eclipse is widely sextile your Sun, so should be fine. :D

    • Diane L

      Hey Sassy,

As far as I know Karen is fine (the only email addy I had was the one from her website). She did tell me one time when she made a change it was fast!

I miss her very much too. :( Loved her website and her writing a lot. Hopefully she will decide to return to cyberspace sooner than later.

Thanks for your reply Diane. Yeah she just vanished, she certainly does make changes fast. Yes hopefully she does return. xxx
