Aries Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe

While sitting and shelling gallons of peas, we’ve been watching back to back episodes of Sharpe’s Rifles starring Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe – a soldier’s soldier in Wellington’s army during the Napoleonic Wars.

Aries Sean Bean is perfectly cast in this role – handsome in a rough and ready way with a decided edge to him.

Richard Sharpe is a fictional character created by Bernard Cornwell in a series of historical novels. His mother is a prostitute and he eventually joins the military to avoid the law as well as a life of extreme poverty. [Aside: I just read an article in today’s newspaper about the success military recruiters are enjoying during the economic recession . . .] Sharpe rises through the ranks, much to the chagrin of his fellow officers who are by and large members of the upper class. He is a brilliant leader, skilled marksman and an honorable man but a bit of a loose cannon. He is also very popular with the ladies of all social positions.

The actor Sean Bean has his Sun in the martial sign of Aries, his Moon in limelight loving Leo and a chart dominated by fire signs making him a natural to play a soldier like Richard Sharpe. There is a very good possibility his Moon is conjunct Uranus in Leo and combined with Venus in flirtatious Gemini could explain why he is on his fourth marriage, mirroring Sharpe’s relationships with women.

Mars, ruler of his Aries Sun, is in Cancer trine Neptune in Scorpio giving him the ability to slip into character on the stage and screen. He has a T-square with Saturn in Capricorn opposing Mars and both squaring Mercury in Aries. I see this as contributing to his drive to succeed in his chosen field and a very direct, blunt manner of speaking. He probably gives his publicist fits!

Growing up Sean’s greatest ambition was not to become an actor but to be a football player easily attributed to having Jupiter in adventurous Sagittarius trine his Mercury. An injury to his leg blocked this from coming about (Jupiter is closely squared by Pluto).

Pluto in Virgo squares his Venus and is inconjunct his Mercury. This helps explain why Sean can play dark, brooding anti-heroes like Richard Sharpe so well because he can draw on his dark side (Pluto) and bring that to light via his Venus and Mercury. Mercury is also the apex of a Yod with Pluto sextile Neptune as the base, furthering this penchant.

All in all, watching Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe has been lots of fun. Thankfully we are only a third of the way through all fourteen episodes because all too soon the green beans will be ready to pick and snap for canning. :D

  • Well a lot of women like a man in uniform, Diane. He’s a good old Sheffield lad from South Yorkshire about 50 miles from here in the sunny UK.

Sean Bean also played Mellors the gardener in Lady Chatterley’s Lover a year after he starred as Sharpe. I saw the movie and distinctly remember his well muscled “backside” discretely filmed in all good possible taste of course…lol

That was the role that made him into a sex symbol. Just thought I’d brighten up your pea podding sessions with an interesting thought!

Oh yeah . . . I’ll have to add that to my movie rental queue!! :D He really is a treat to watch as an actor. Between him & Viggo Mortensen on LOR, I was a happy camper. ***drool***

      diane!

      p.s. “sunny” UK?! ***grin***

I would encourage you to read the books as well. They are quite enjoyable – especially the earlier written ones.

Good idea, Chris. My friend who lent us the DVD’s has the books and will be happy to lend them too. :)

Sean Bean is my English friend Lee’s favorite actor. She still loves the Sharpe series.

Me? I always cry in LOTR as he’s dying. sniff.

He’s also starring in the HBO series (if they ever get it up to snuff) “A Game of Kings” based on G.R.R. Martin’s humongous series of books. I personally hold a big grudge against Martin, however, because it’s taken him 6 years to write the fifth book. Don’t think they should publish a series until all the books are finished. grumble. grumble. I’m WAITING, George. Get a move on.

Didn’t know he was an Aries.

I’ve read at least three in that series but I agree about the frustration of waiting on the latest installment . . . especially if it’s over a year. :D

eh, you know Viggo’s a Libra, neith? sigh. a beautiful, beautiful man. Interesting IRL too.

Yes, Viggo is roughly six months older than Sean. He has a Moon in Aquarius so not only are their Suns in complementary signs, but so are their Moons.

Viggo always struck me as more of the metrosexual type and Sean is the “good old Sheffield lad” who probably loves to watch football (soccer) beer in hand, yelling at the refs. I haven’t read anything about their relationship on the set of LOTR but I bet they got on quite well.

Heh, my Aries hubby is enjoying the Sharpe series except for the times Sharpe lets himself get seduced by some woman of questionable virtue . . . AGAIN! Otherwise, he cheers him on and boos the villeins. Fun! :D

Wow, I never heard of this series. I hunted it down, I’m 20 minutes into the first episode, I like it already. Thanks for drawing it to my attention!

    • Diane L

      You’re welcome!! :P

Yes, it is a winner! Of course, I do love the BBC productions, especially the period pieces like this one they do extremely well.

I found all of the Sharpe videos and I’m just starting #10 now, I think only 4 left to go. I am enjoying them quite a bit. But something kept nagging at me, Sean Bean looked familiar but I couldn’t remember where I’d seen him before. So I looked him up in IMDB.com and I was disappointed to discover he was in the LOTR movies. I’m probably one of the few people on earth that hated those stupid movies. But I won’t hold it against him.

Please remember that I’m still in my early twenties and do not be offended by the following comment:

Though he’s too old for me, he is extremely attractive, and I could probably be enticed into a a May…September romance. :P I mean, he’s older than both of my parents.

Aries men always come across as so alpha-male to me. And, naturally, I like that.

    ROFL!!! no problem, Nic!

One of their better qualities! I happen to enjoy Aries men as a rule too. :P

    What is LOTR, please?

    • Diane L

LOTR is “Lord of the Rings” and refers to the movies based on Tolkein’s wonderful trilogy about Middle Earth and Hobbits. :)

  • Joe

I had my eye on him since he played a rogue IRA fighter in one of those Tom Clancy book-to-movie gigs, Patriot Games, the one with Harrison Ford as the American agent. He’s very handsome no matter what role he plays. :)

    • Diane L

Yes, I recall that movie. It was fun & action packed! Sean Bean does know how to play a great villain and has been cast as quite a few. That’s why seeing him play a full on hero in Richard Sharpe is a treat. :P
