Observations: In Praise of Mercury Retrograde

© Diane Lang

My Libra side has been kicking up a fuss lately reminding me there are always two sides to every story and therefore it follows Mercury retrograde offers as many benefits as it does drawbacks. I realize this runs contrary to the prevailing opinion but what the heck, I’m going to throw my thoughts out there anyway!

On an average Mercury spends approximately three weeks moving in reverse, three times a year with a week or so on either side of the dates it stations retrograde and direct when the small planet is moving very slowly. It makes absolutely no sense AT ALL to spend a third of every year being afraid to do anything out of fear things may go wrong, now does it? Besides, there are millions of people who know nothing about Mercury retrogrades and who manage just fine.

We live in an extremely fast paced world, especially those who live in urban areas with their latest and greatest bit of communication technology within arm’s reach at all times, day and night. Please believe me when I say one can lead a very good life without access to those devices . . . I do it every day. Obviously I have internet access but I don’t have a cell phone, just an old land-line phone that even works when the power is out and doesn’t require batteries.

Part of the creative process is coming up with new ideas or new variations of existing concepts and most creative types acknowledge the need for peace and quiet to do that. Mercury retrogrades are perfect opportunities to take time for reflection and contemplation. If we are constantly engaged externally, how can we turn inwards?

It is convenient to blame Mercury Retch for holiday travel glitches, packages not getting to their destinations on time or mis-communications with friends and family but keep in mind those things happen every single year whether Mercury is retrograde or not. It’s not Mercury’s fault people try to cram too many tasks into too little time during the holidays, is it?

I’m beginning to suspect most of difficulties attached to Mercury retrograde are anecdotal rather than fact. We tend to pay more attention to Mercury related matters when Mercury is retrograde that’s all. Mercury was running along just fine a month ago when one of six books I ordered from Amazon.com got lost and had to be re-ordered, and since Mercury went retrograde this time I finally managed to figure out how to get an email account for Libra Seeking Balance set up and functioning!

If you are feeling anxious and nervous now, it probably has more to do with Uranus being squared first by the Sun, then Mercury over the next few days. Jupiter sitting right next to Uranus is doing his bit to blow things out of proportion too. The best thing we can do is slow down, take plenty of time outs and practice our favorite method of relaxation. Chances are the sky is not going to fall if we don’t get Aunt Alice’s package sent in time for Christmas delivery or those cookies decorated for the office party. Relax!!!

I would love to hear others thoughts on this . . . :D

  • I’m looking forward to bit of a respite from devices for a week or so. This retrograde happens to be in my 4th house. I’m going back home to spend time with my Dad and probably going old school- by bringing a few books!

      Hi Michelle!

I’m going back home to spend time with my Dad and probably going old school- by bringing a few books!

LOL!! After looking at a Kindle, I have come to the conclusion I much prefer to read regular books . . . :)

      Have a good time!

You are so, so right about holiday nonsense occurring all around us whether Mercury is retrograde or not. Many wait until the last possible minute to get their shopping done and wreak havoc for everyone else. A Mercury-retro period is absolutely NOT an excuse for laziness, poor planning, and so forth.

I’ve got some time off from work beginning next week, straight until the new year. Also done with school :) until the end of January. You’d better believe I’m gonna enjoy my spare time. I will use some of that time to create/work on a new project I plan to present very soon :).

As the Joker (played by Jack Nicholson) says in the movie “Batman”, “wait ’til they get a load of me”…

Mercury-retro has honestly been good to me throughout my time in school. In fact, while I’ve struggled a bit in the department of Motivation, I’ve found that my best writing comes forth during this time. It’s usually riskier but it pays off.

    Here’s to a wonderful Mercury-retro!

      Hey Deb! :)

So true! It’s when we need good planning the most. :P

You just ROCKED school! Aren’t you glad you took the chance and did it? I think it can be easier to tap into the creative flow during a Mercury Rx because it does encourage us to turn inward and slow down.

      Here’s to a wonderful Mercury-retro!

      Thanks!

I have another Mercury Rx success story to tell. My dad’s TV signal stopped working and I figured out what the problem was . . . dead antenna. My Aries & I got him a new antenna, all the necessary components, installed everything and Voila! TV works!! His antenna was about 30 yrs old and needed replacing with a new digital friendly one anyway. All during this past week too. :D

slowness, stillness and quiet. perhaps it might seem lazy, I dunno, it’s the only way I seem to be able to operate at present. It seems as if with the quickening I am being forced to go slow and steady to keep the balance. then, when the inspirations come through, they manifest rapidly. kind of like tricking time. am loving this merc retro.

Makes complete sense to me. Do you have much Libra in your natal chart because I often feel the need to balance the energy too.

then, when the inspirations come through, they manifest rapidly. kind of like tricking time. am loving this merc retro.

Wow! Excellent description, “tricking time”. :D

  • This is a terrific article, Diane! A real breath of sanity and fresh air about Mercury Retrograde and how people overdramatize it. This IS a difficult time, but Mercury retrograde is NOT the whole story. the fact that it’s conjunct Pluto for more than two weeks, along with Mars and the Sun is what’s making it so tough to cope with. AND Uranus stationary. And an eclipse coming. It’s the whole picture we have to look at. Great job! Donna Cunningham

      Hi Donna!!

Thank you very much! :D This post has been building for a long time because I have seen Mercury retrogrades being used as a scare tactic to draw paying clients and that deeply bothers me.

Besides . . . it’s Mercury = mental = all in our heads! **grin** I completely agree about all the other influences at play right now. And as I’m sure you know, this is about the most stressful time of year anyways. LOL

      Thanks for stopping by. :P

It just occurred to me the periods when Mercury are retrograde act as a balance for the periods it is direct. No different from a lunar cycle from New Moon to Full Moon . . . perfectly natural part of life.

    • Joe

Just like tides, seasons, night and day, and so on. We’re the only ones in creation that seem to have a problem with these cycles! :)

  • Jessica

I agree. I have a friend who just signed a new job contract, and out of habit I asked if maybe she could wait a few more days. She really couldn’t, and my comment made her nervous, so then I said if the hypothetical worst comes to pass and you have to renegotiate the deal later, it’s just as likely to be to your benefit. Also, I bought my computer during Mercury retrograde and it works just marvelously.

    • Diane L

      Wonderful examples, Jessica. Thanks! :D

It’s been a rather fun mental exercise re-thinking Mercury Rx but I have to say since I’ve been noting the timing of what are considered typical Mercury Rx problems, the worst usually occurred when Mercury was direct.

It is just such a great scam to drive clients to consult their astrologer before they make a move . . . yuk.
