Mars as Archetype in Attraction

As a woman and an astrologer, I’m interested in exploring the elements in the natal chart showing us the type of man we are attracted to and Mars is the starting place in a woman’s chart. Because I’m essentially a heterosexual female, I’m working from that point of view because I could only guess at how this works in the chart of those drawn to their own sex.

How Mars operates in the chart can give us clues into understanding the type of man we are drawn to. The sign and aspects to Mars all factor in. I’m going to use my own chart as an example partly because it’s the chart I’m most familiar with and because Mars is my chart ruler. My Mars falls in Scorpio, one of the signs he rules (the other being Aries) and is conjunct my Ascendant and Mercury in Scorpio. Pluto, the other ruler of Scorpio, squares Mars and Uranus is inconjunct to him. What this says to me about the archetype most attractive to me is I find dark, brooding sorts with strong features and magnetic eyes (the classic Scorpio look) appealing. The Mercury and Uranus aspects to Mars point to intelligence and an independent attitude.

The sign on the cusp of the seventh house impacts the archetype represented by Mars too because it is always the complement of the Ascendant. In my chart Taurus rules my seventh house so we can add an Earthy element to the picture as in well grounded or someone who enjoys working with his hands and likes the simple life.

So the picture emerging is of a man who has a strong physical presence, operates independently, likes being out-of-doors close to Nature, has a sharp mind and is comfortable dealing with strong minded women. Now I’m married to a man with Aries Sun, Moon and Rising with Mars in Scorpio in his eighth house and whose Sun is square to Uranus. He has worked as a cowboy, farmed for a living and currently works as a carpenter. Even though he has a sharp mind he prefers to come across as down to earth and practical rather than intellectual and he’s damn independent!! He’s dark haired with strong features too.

As one who married in her early forties for the first time, I was rather taken aback when I realized how well my husband fit into my archetypal profile. It does demonstrate the power of the archetype and how when we run smack into someone who fits it well, we can find our lives forever changed. Of course, Pluto was also in the process of transiting my Juno in Scorpio in the 12th house at the time I starting dating him (Juno is often referred to as the “marriage” asteroid) . . . but that’s another story!

This is a photo of Sean Connery as James Bond in about 1965. Sean Connery has Scorpio on the Midheaven and many of his movie roles were Scorpio types and he presents the classic tall, dark and deadly archetype. I have always enjoyed watching him in whatever role he’s playing on screen.

Interesting! My Mars is in Taurus at the top of my chart. I have been attracted to and dated many Taurus men. I like to cook, they like to eat, what’s not to like?! They can be rather self-involved, but I’m good with that because with Aquarius on my Descendant and Uranus and Moon on my Ascendant I like some independence and that self-containment keeps them from being emotionally demanding. They are nice and sensual, too. I have 5 planets in earth signs (4 in Virgo, incuding Venus/Pluto conjoined and also conjunct Mercury). (I’ve been involved with Virgo men, too, and have to say they have been the absolute best lovers – perhaps they aim to please – but outside of bed they can be darn critical! The Taurus males – sensuous, but alas sometimes rather lazy. And tacaño!, ie, cheap!) Alas none have managed to “stick” – no doubt for other, complicated reasons. But we’re talking attraction here, not commitment, no?!

hehehe, tacaño! My teacher taught me a move of touching your hand to your elbow to signify that. I have Mars in Capricorn in the 12th opposition Venus. Lately, I’m not even sure. I used to joke not so long ago that I had a thing for men with medium length dark hair (basically the typical college “indie” type meaning I’m going around the NYU campus saying “Schwing!”) and I haven’t been attracted to a blonde for a long time until recently. I discovered I like many types of men, older, younger. I also used to think I had a huge yen for Aquarians. I had a crush on a tall, medium length dark haired pale faced Aquarian for three years. Distant, charismatic, friendly, not into me. (Now I have a thing for a short man I believe is an Aries who has a very funny short haircut and dark hair, weird). Funny thing, the only men I’ve ever been physically close or almost in a relationship with (two blondes, in fact) were Cancers. This bodes ill, because they would always let me make the first move and are pussy boys, forgive the term. However, I discovered a sort of tender assertiveness in myself lately (Capricorn/Cancer?) I’ve sort of had a rocky road accepting my attraction to women too (my two close friends, a Scorpio and a Pisces, attempted to push me out of the closet my junior year, I prefer to crawl sideways). I was amused by it, didn’t treat it seriously, still have a complicated relationship with it. I like dark haired women tending toward the softer hourglass figure and a large butt (Cancer), like Nigella Lawson, for instance, who is a Capricorn and was actually put in a Venus in Cancer description on a website even though she doesn’t have it.

By funny haircut I mean fauxhawk, but I surprise myself.

mars in cancer here and i love fatherly-types and guys that like to cuddle and play romance/knight-in-shining-armor games. unfortunately, cancer mars isn’t very good at sending direct messages of attraction and i usually go after cancerian types who aren’t very direct either, so i’m usually disappointed and left to brood and sulk.i’ve recently been trying to rebel against the sensitive caring types, in favor of “manly” men with muscles, rough hands, and a get down or lay down mentality- but that won’t work either.

Totally right on, Neith! Explains my very bad judgment in choice of men. ;-)

The type where we drool and sigh but has nothing to do if they are worth keeping around!! Sounds you have developed a very good understanding of what works for you too in relationships. With a 7th house Uranus myself, I understand about “emotionally demanding” not being desirable . . .ummmmmmm, ditto on Virgo men as lovers . . . the best!!

  • neith

Funny thing, the only men I’ve ever been physically close or almost in a relationship with (two blondes, in fact) were Cancers. With your Mars in the 12th being less accessible, it makes sense your Venus/Moon in Cancer is going to be more evident in the types you are attracted too. And it makes sense you would find Cancerian type women appealing. I associate Mars in Capricorn with men you meet in a professional capacity who are very much all business at work and lots of fun outside the office. :-)

I have to agree with you because Mars is very, very sensitive in Cancer and quick to pick up on subtleties the rough & ready type will completely miss. If you have Gemini rising then Sagittarius is on your 7th. Sagittarius is very much into needing lots & lots of “space” in relationships . . . and that sort is tough for Mars in Cancer to deal with. But keep in mind we’re talking archetype here not soul mates. So perhaps that cowboy image can come with the soul of a poet! :-)

  • chrispito

aahhhhh!!!!!! he is deadly hot. i can’t even DEAL. ha ha ha!

I’ve only had two serious relationships in my life. My first was a Capricorn with Sagittarius Moon and Aries Mars. He was a total introvert with substance abuse issues and you would NEVER guess he had an Aries Mars. He never raised his voice or got excited (mind you, his problems might have dampened it)? A gentle man who was reportedly destroyed when I left him but he never tried to interfere or get me back (Aquarius Venus). I actually appreciated that a lot. When I’m ready to go, I’m going! My current SO is also a Capricorn, with Scorpio Moon and Sagittarius Mars. He is much like my first partner in that he is extremely quiet and soft spoken and would never raise his voice at anyone unless he was forced to his limit (and his limit goes very, very far). He’s much warmer and openly loving than my first partner, which I am so grateful for. Being ignored by that Aquarius Venus almost killed me. My Earth requires a physical relationship.Looking to my father (because I base all opinions of men on my father ;) ha, not quite but there’s got to be a connection)…My Sun is 16 degrees Taurus, and my Dad has Mars/Moon conjunct at 15 degrees Taurus (he is a Libra).Does this mean I expect my men to obey me? (Me? Never!)

  • chrispito

BTW I can’t date Taurus men. They irritate the hell out of me. I do like to be friends with them, though!

“I associate Mars in Capricorn with men you meet in a professional capacity who are very much all business at work and lots of fun outside the office.”Yeah, not my type, really. It’s weird, the Cancer influence plays out not in the men I’m attracted to, but the ones that were ultimately attracted to me. Does Uranus play out at all in who you’re attracted to? For me, the man must be distant/interesting enough to dream of. Before my Cancerian friend, it used to be that when men got close and started to like me, that’s when I would distance myself and need breathing room. I’m tired of not meeting anyone halfway though and need to break the pattern. Though I did get scared when my Cancer friend and I started becoming “one person,” I also didn’t guess that he liked me for a long time, feeling unworthy.

Mars in aquarius married to Natal Cancer (17 yrs upcoming) whose natal Mars is Gemini …

  • Devil Mood

You married a cowboy!!! Now that’s something I don’t get to say around here very often haha And a triple Aries…wow. This is one of my favourite subjects :) *blush*We share similar interests, but while you go for a Scorpio-Taurus combo, mine is a Scorpio-Libra, which is also a Venus ruled sign. I like the gentleman a lot :) Even though my Mars is in Libra I’m usually more attracted to my Venus sign Scorpio because I’ve got all that in the Descendant. I think the fact that Venus and Mars are in mutual reception mixes the two signs in my heart. lol

  • Joe

Well, for my part, my Mars is in Libra. My SO’s natal Sun is 0 degrees Libra and I’d swear that those scales cast a Virgo shadow from time to time. The industry and practicality he can sometimes demonstrate…OTOH, my Mars trines my 1st house Saturn, so maybe that’s why I like daddy-types. :o)And Mars is conj my Uranus also in Libra, which seems to me to indicate a drive for (or appreciation of?) independent thinking. Does this conj reflect my characteristics or those of others?

  • neith

aahhhhh!!!!!! he is deadly hot. i can’t even DEAL. ha ha ha!LOL! know the feeling . . . add in the accent and that deep voice and I’m stunned! Sean Connery is a Virgo with Capricorn Rising. :-DMy current SO is also a Capricorn, with Scorpio Moon and Sagittarius Mars. My Earth requires a physical relationship. My niece has Taurus rising and she always snuggles right up next to me whenever we sit together . . . always has. Earth signs seem to need the physical contact and non-verbal communicating. I can see Venus in Aquarius not being all that interested in the whole touchy-feely thing. Venus doesn’t seem very happy in Aquarius to me.

You married a cowboy!!! Now that’s something I don’t get to say around here very often haha And a triple Aries…wow. He has stopped cowboying by the time I met him but he still had the leather chaps and wore for moving bales of hay. We share similar interests, but while you go for a Scorpio-Taurus combo, mine is a Scorpio-Libra, which is also a Venus ruled sign. I like the gentleman a lot :) Even though my Mars is in Libra I’m usually more attracted to my Venus sign Scorpio because I’ve got all that in the Descendant. My jaw totally dropped the first time I saw him in a movie!! Nice combination of beauty and sophistication with the dark & deadly thing . . . :-)Jay Tavare

Does this conj reflect my characteristics or those of others? Both would be my guess but favoring you. I still think the right older wise man type (Neptune in Sag on your DES) is an archetype that really gets your attention!! :-D

  • Devil Mood

Neith ;)I know I posted that Extreme video but I have Venus-Saturn too, I like the traditional short-hair guy heheh ;)But thanks for the link, I see what you mean.

  • Joe

I still think the right older wise man type (Neptune in Sag on your DES) is an archetype that really gets your attention!!Is this because the DES mirrors the ASC? The ASC describes the self and the DES reflects others?I think I see the influence of Sag but not Neptune.

  • nathifah

Ahhh! What a man!! And I love his voice. Now, about Mars,I wonder why it doesn’t work that way for me.I have Mars in Gemini but do not find airy, outgoing, communicative guys interesting. I have never had a man that was an air sign. Pisces, Scorpio,Virgo.. the one common thread in all is that they have venus or Mars in fire signs conjunct Pluto and are all very Plutonian:Intense, passionate and possesive. One interesting thing is that my first major relationship, my ex-husband and my actual SO have their Mars in the exact same degree of the same sign , and exactly conjunct my Pluto! Could it be that Mars is in the 8th house so it is not very strong in me and Pluto, ruler of my Scorpio ASC on the other hand is at the top of my chart?

http://www.geocities.com/choctaw_whiteindian/GRAPHICS/Jay.Tavare_1.jpgWell here Jay Tavare is, laughing at a bear. He is definitely sexy, in a way that kind of makes me squirm. And intense Scorpio sexuality definitely makes me squirm, I almost forgot.Hrithik Roshan comes to mind though I’m not sure he is the swarthy/sexy Scorpio type, he has a beautiful smile. Which is not obvious in any pictures I found, only in this corny Bollywood song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-gTQhKu9e0Plus Marlon Brando’s grandson, Tuki Brando seems destined to be that swarthy type, even though he is a babyhttp://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j123/randomairsoy/tuki2.jpghttp://farm1.static.flickr.com/179/397460222_e7e8efe3f2.jpgOf course there’s Scorpio Alain Delonhttp://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/tuesdayweld/alaindelonbw.jpgWho is pretty-boy ish enough for my tastes.I like Hugh Dancy/Louis Garrel a lot, I always seem to like men with darker hair and light skin.

  • neith

Is this because the DES mirrors the ASC? The ASC describes the self and the DES reflects others? In a word, Yes! If we can gradually assimilate the qualities represented by planets in the 7th house into our selves, it is often a freeing experience. The more you see yourself as a spiritual being with grace, compassion and wisdom (something all the rest of us see in you . . .) the less likely you will find the less desirable faces of Neptune walking up to you. :-)

  • neith

I always seem to like men with darker hair and light skin. All lovely men! Hrithik Roshan is a Capricorn too and not as dark as many Indian men are. Alain Delon is definitely a beautiful man too. Something to keep in mind for Mars in Capricorn is the god, Pan, is another face of this complex sign with his wildness and love of the more extreme. Also with a 12th house Mars fantasy is a natural part of the Mars expression (Pisces rules the natural 12th house).

  • neith

Could it be that Mars is in the 8th house so it is not very strong in me and Pluto, ruler of my Scorpio ASC on the other hand is at the top of my chart?Hi Nathifah! It may be the combination of Mars falling in your 8th house and sextile your Pluto. With Scorpio rising, aspects to your Mars take on special importance. With your well-populated 8th house, the Scorpio/Pluto influence is very strong in your chart, so it is not surprising you draw more intense types to you and are comfortable with that! :-)

Jay Tavare :).What’s he’s star-sign & what planetshe have ???Hi anon,He is breathtaking, isn’t he! I couldn’t find a birth date for him, just birthday greetings from fans on his website at the end of March, so I’m pretty sure he is an Aries. He plays the warrior type very, very well. I believe he is around 35 yrs ~.Here’s a link to his website:http://www.jaytavare.com/As an Aries Sun person, he’s most compatible with those people who have lots of Fire and Air in their charts [Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius].

    Jay Tavare Birthdate. :) March 23′rd 1969 – 1972 ??.

  • neith

March 23′rd 1969 – 1972 ??.If he was born in 1969, he would have almost nothing but fire & air but the other years, there is earth & water to give him more compatibility with earth & water signs. :-D
