Observations: Mars in Cancer, Mercury Retch & Saturn Thoughts

© Diane Lang

Whew! Mercury stationed retrograde yesterday, Mars entered Cancer in the wee hours and the Moon shifted into Libra. The last I like because Libra Moons usually treat me well but the other two, not so much.

This was one of the tougher lead ups to a Mercury Station I’ve seen in quite awhile and largely due to the opposition to Neptune exact on 28 July. Lots of mental whiteouts made writing difficult so I ended up choosing to do simple, routine tasks like picking berries, mowing the lawn, cleaning house and so on. I have Mars conjunct Mercury so when Mercury is acting up, I can turn to physical activity (Mars) and it usually helps me regain mental focus. Part of the transit package over the past few days was a Mars in Gemini trine to my Libra Sun giving it a lift, so choosing physical activity was an easy call.

Now Mars is in Cancer . . . not its happy place. While Cancer is an energetic cardinal sign, it is too sensitive for blunt, direct Mars to operate well. Cancer is a subtle sign and will move sideways rather than confront someone directly when attacked. Mars in Cancer gets a mixed review from me because it irritates my Libra planets no end while being very supportive to my Scorpio planets and Ascendant. There is a day or so in late August when Mars in Cancer will be squaring my Moon at the same time Saturn in Libra is conjoining it . . . there will probably be some less than pretty moments around here. I’m just thankful we get Mars in Cancer squaring Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn out of the way before he squares Saturn in Libra. I’ll take my silver linings where I can get them, thank you very much!

Now I’ve been contemplating Saturn and his effect a lot lately. It would seem the old cold one really does put a damper on the sector of chart he is transiting or lives in natally. For example, if you have Saturn in Aries, normally a very independent sign, chances are you will act more like a Libra who prefers to consult with others before making a decision. Saturn in Libra, or in the seventh house, often chooses (or forces) the individual to learn how to go it alone. In the long run (Saturn) we usually benefit from Saturn’s lessons, unpleasant as they are at the time.

Saturn is currently transiting my eleventh house and conjoining my Moon. The eleventh house is our peer groups and associates and the Moon often represents women in our lives. The eleventh house is ruled by Aquarius and I can make a case for putting cyber-friends and other internet groups like FaceBook there. This past year I have lost touch with some close women friends, both on the internet and in the physical world. I am hoping those people will reemerge once Saturn moves past my Moon but we’ll see.

How was your Mercury Station? What do you think Mars in Cancer will bring you? And I would love to hear what others have to add on Saturn both natally and transiting too. Thanks!! :D

Hi i need a bit of advice. My ASC is Gemini so the ruler of my ASC is Mercury who turned RX.I need to move out of my parent’s house soon and i need to look for place to rent NOW… and i am scared to do so while Mercury is RX ( on the cusp of my 4th/3rd houses now) Is Mercury RX good for house hunting? i do not wish to sign a contract now but i am forced to look for a place.
I will move out at the end of september so Mercury will not be RX anymore.
About Saturn, well i have Saturn in my 5th house in Libra and a SN in my 7th house,so yes i am F-O-R-C-E-D to do everything by myself.
When i need a partner (for example now to help me move etc) they are GONE puff !!!

    • Hey Liz!

Mercury Rx is just fine for house hunting though it might not be a good idea to put money down until Mercury is direct once more & picking up speed. With Mercury Rx in your third please be sure to get all the information and make copies if necessary. It’s easy to be absentminded and leave bits & pieces of important stuff laying about.

One more caution is if something looks too good to be true, it probably is . . . Neptune will be opposing Mercury (in Leo-Aquarius) next Monday, the 8th.

Learning self-reliance is ever so much fun, isn’t it? After you make this move successfully, treat yourself to your favorite luxury because you will have earned it!! :D

Oh he is such a dampener on the Moon! I was just going over the dates again to share here and was just shaking my head. Thank goodness he, and my Capricorn Moon have much more support for the final round of his square coming up at from the 5th Sept. From the 8th Dec to mid March, he squared my Moon and honestly, it was like the light of happiness was just snuffed out of my life some days. I was angry about old, present things, and so confused about everything UGH. I was really digging in deep with a 11th/12th House cusp Moon about my purpose in life, not the meaning of life, my purpose and role within it and what talents/intentions/callings I was wasting.

I also had Neptune and Chiron in opposition to natal 7th House Juno, my SN was activated on and off, and the transitting SN was on my Sun for a fair part of it. On top of that, the Capricorn energy was all over my Sun – no wonder I felt like crap lol Hot on the heels of Pluto oppose Sun however and the end of the transit found me far more resolute in what I was going to do and a whole stack of other personality quirks/agendas that keep revealing themselves over time. Crap transit with fabulous after effects and whilst he IS supported next round, I’d be lying if I said I was looking forward to it :)

Saturn-Moon transits are far better in retrospect when we can congratulate ourselves on our new found maturity etc, etc. But in the process? They are really tough and dreary. Pluto transits are another a whole better in theory than in practice. LOL We tend to survive them though amazingly enough. Often in spite of ourselves. :P

I too have a friend who has a Scorpio Asc. and, transiting Saturn is conj. his natal saturn in the 11th house. Presently, he has decided to isolate himself from all of his old friends. He seems to be floundering at the moment on how he is going to reinvent himself. I am chalking up the floundering to his Scorpio Asc. since he is an Aries, and they generally don’t have a problem with making up what direction they want to go in.

    • Hi William!

You are right about Aries not generally having a problem finding a direction and heading off. Isolating himself is more typical of a Scorpio Rising, and those with Scorp rising also like to work in private on a plan of action, only presenting to others when it’s finished. Does he have Mars in Scorpio? And if so, is it in the 1st or the 12th? That could make a big difference because Mars rules Aries and they are sensitive to the placement and aspects to natal Mars.

Hang in there with the Saturn transit to your Moon. I was rather content with Saturn transiting my Moon because it calmed my natal Uranus/Moon, but I imagine that’s not most people’s experience. Looks like Saturn will station Rx on your Sun, too, next January (although Uranus will give you a nice trine then). Again, Saturn’s transit to my Sun wasn’t so bad either, but I’m used to that guy being square my Sun. I did have some intense physical/work pressure though, and I learned that Saturn doesn’t like overwork either – he’s all about limits, and that means limits to work as well. I took a vacation to renew myself when Saturn was exactly on my Sun and it was great.
Neptune opposing Mercury stationing on my natal Mercury gave me a nice little gift. During the night, I woke up with an insight about how my full first house (4 planets including Merc in it, and Moon on the Asc conj Uranus) processes just about everything bodily. I’m so the princess and pea, so physically sensitive, and I realized how critical it is for me to take care of my body and release stress (which I kinda knew anyway, but not in a compassionate way; rather as an obligation foisted on me). I also really have to let go of a lot of Merc in Virgo criticism, much of it projected (Neptune opposition now), because it’s just unhealthy and I can’t be productive and happy otherwise.

      Hey Les!

While I’m not thrilled about the upcoming Saturn-Sun transit, like you I have a natal Saturn sq Sun so I tend to be a very responsible sort anyway. I have gradually – veerrry gradually – learned to schedule in enough downtime to help avoid burnout. Like not working at the computer on weekends! :P

WOW! This is a great lesson for all of us with planets in the first & on the ASC! I can certainly relate to this. LOVE those gifts from the unconscious in the middle of the night . . . the way my 12th house Mercury works the best.

      Great stuff, Les! :D

I had transiting Saturn opposing my natal moon last Fall and like Karen, I was just in a funk. Saturn again opposed my moon from about mid-May to mid-July. An old love popped back into my life – and popped back out as the transit passed. Not sure what I’m supposed to learn with that one but I’m very glad I’m down with this transit.

I have Saturn in the 5th and its been interesting. When I was young, I worked very hard on my artistic talents and was a very good musician and writer though I chose not to do either professionally. I had kids a little later than my friends and they are the light of my life! But romance has been consistenly a bust for me (-:

‘Funk’ is a good word for Saturn-Moon transits. As for your old love popping in & out, that could be a combination of Saturn opp your Moon as well as all those planets rolling through Aries around the same time. By mid-July every one but Uranus has moved on . . .
