Scorpio – The Power to Transform

It is Scorpio season once more and there is a bite in the air. The Sun has entered my twelfth house with Mercury to follow on Wednesday and I find myself contemplating Scorpio’s signature ability of transformation in relation to the Neptune/twelfth house problem of addiction and dependency.

Even with all my twelfth house planets, supposedly a sure sign of a weakness for drugs and alcohol, I am not an addictive personality. That is not to say I haven’t been addicted to various things over the years because I have. I smoked cigarettes for over twenty years, a pack-a-day habit right up to the time I quit close to seven years ago – haven’t touched one since. I believe this is due in large part to Mars in Scorpio on the Ascendant gifting me with a desire not to be controlled by anything or anyone without my express consent – particularly when it comes to my body (first house).

After turning this over in my mind for several days, it dawned on me my dislike for getting high had more to do with a profound uneasiness about feeling out of control than anything else. Scorpios and other Pluto ruled types will often choose a rather austere course, avoiding drugs and alcohol as well as remaining celibate for years at a time to avoid letting anyone have something to hold over them.

Scorpio has a reputation for having an intense sexuality but I bet in many cases this has more to do with their willingness to smile, say nothing and leave others to draw their own often erroneous conclusions. Behind the myth, this is a deeply private water sign who prefer quality to quantity in their lovers. If this is not the case, then my guess is they have Scorpio’s co-ruler Mars in adventurous fire or detached air signs.

Another factor for me is when I’m done with something or someone, it’s over. This may have to do with having a preponderance of fixed signs, one of which is Scorpio. I’ve watched those with strongly mutable charts “play” with their addictions, i.e., smoking one or two cigarettes a day to being able to smoke a pack when out partying, and then back to the occasional smoke. If I allowed myself ONE cigarette, I’d be back up to a pack a day within a week. Heh, cardinal types will keep quitting over and over and over . . .

We all have Scorpio somewhere in our charts and during the next few weeks of Scorpio season, we can all get a little more in touch with this transformative sign. Also consider the house Scorpio falls in may be where we are driven to maintain the greatest amount of control.

Scorpio on my 4th house cusp, but Neptune/Jupiter widely conjunct the IC from the 3rd tend to erode any sense of control there. That and Uranus conjunct Moon on the Ascendant. Never comfortable with drugs, since my Merc-Pluto conjunction doesn't like the mind being out of control, but alcohol has a nice calming effect on that Moon-Uranus (and all the Virgo uptight energy – Pisces being opposite – and Neptune sextile my Pluto in Virgo stellium). Virgo's concern for health probably helps keep that in line.My pSun, pMerc, and pVenus are all in Scorpio. Maybe the transiting Sun will highlight things there.

It's true- even though I'm a Pisces I've never once been attracted by drugs or alcohol. The closest I've ever come to what one could call "addicted" was when I'd be on shoots and we were in East Jesus, Nowhere and there wasn't anything to do but go drink- and even then, it wasn't like it was something I particularly wanted. Since leaving that field I think I've only drank two or three more times (that is, in like three months), and I can totally do without it. It's just a weird mental adjustment. It probably also helps that Scorpio falls in my 6th House, so like you, I'm really not keen on losing control of my body. (Granted, other horrible things can happen with that placement, see my blog two posts ago, but at least I can rule out drugs.)

Darn that Mars in a fixed sign.Yeah, I'm just not that into anything more than maybe an extremely-slow-sipped glass or two of wine or champagne or hard cider, all of which should be cold. I don't like beer so much. I can live without mixed drinks. I smoked my first and only joint when I was fifteen and failed miserably. I smoked my first and only cigarette on our sixth floor fire escape, and my dad made sure that it was my first and last cigarette when he made me realize that I couldn't afford to sustain a habit at fifteen…

I have to say I am also supposed to be prone to addictions. I am a sun leo conjunct virgo in mars square neptune. I have no addictions except to caffeine. I do love to dance!

I am a scorpion and have never been even interested in drugs or alcohol. I get sleepy after a sip of red wine, but maybe that is god protecting me from alcohol!

Wow! Lots of responses to this post so far! Wonderful!! :-D

LOL, HH72!I dare say it works in the same way for relationships too! LOL!Same caveat with the amount of mutable in a chart but I have seen evidence to support this. Strongly mutable types seem to be able to juggle several relationships at the same time. I discovered VERY early on this was so not for me . . .

Usual Scorp trust issues can compound things – especially when discovered after the fact. Live and learn.

I can count the number of times on one hand when I got high by myself – it was very much a social thing (Libra Moon conjunct Neptune in the 11th). (Granted, other horrible things can happen with that placement, see my blog two posts ago, but at least I can rule out drugs.)Excellent post! Let's scare Lucy to DeathPushing the limits of control is another Scorp trick all right. Mars-Saturn in Scorpio in the 6th does fit too. Do you feel you have the ability to endure far beyond what most other people can? Yoga=sanity for you.

Yeah, I'm just not that into anything more than maybe an extremely-slow-sipped glass or two of wine or champagne or hard cider, all of which should be cold.heh, you definitely have a chart that fits the Plutonian profile! You & I are extremely fortunate in our deeply trustworthy husbands. For Libras with lots of Scorpio/Pluto that is a must.

I do love to dance! It's the square to Neptune that is a traditional indicator of being prone to addiction. But I can see where your Sun-Mars conjunction will offset that.

Hi Laura!I am a scorpion and have never been even interested in drugs or alcohol. The one Scorpio I can think of who wrestled with addictions most of his life had his Mars in Aries. However, he pulled it together around the time he turned 60 yrs and now lives an extremely ascetic life – an amazing transformation well within a Scorpio's capacity.

Pushing the limits of control is another Scorp trick all right. Mars-Saturn in Scorpio in the 6th does fit too. Do you feel you have the ability to endure far beyond what most other people can?You know, it's weird- even when I'm miserable, I will never quit. While I don't see that as being particularly strong, it's garnered some admiration from people in my life. I remember staying at camp the entire summer even though I couldn't wait to leave (because you know, leaving prematurely, that's just WEAK) and literally running myself into the ground to finish my coursework with flying colors during undergrad #1. Not to mention that working in TV production is not for the fainthearted- if I could do that for as long as I did, I think that attests to a good amount of Mars-Saturn strength. So to answer your question, yes, I think I probably do. :) I can count the number of times on one hand when I got high by myself – it was very much a social thingExactly. I'm not really sure where it would indicate this in my chart, but I've always viewed recreational drugs as a social thing. I would never drink on my own. I have no aversion to smoking pot (in fact, I enjoy it from time to time), but I never need or want it bad enough to go out and buy it for myself. My marijuana use is restricted to when I'm around people who are super-stressed out and we're all taking a break. Or sometimes when I'm in a relationship. ("Shut up, TMI," says my inner Scorpio.)

You know, it's weird- even when I'm miserable, I will never quit. Oh gawd yes! There is this sorta Mars in Scorpio machisma thing that we hate to admit we can't carry on. That being said, having Mars in Scorpio (& the other fixed signs) does bless one with a marked degree of overall toughness. It's only been fairly recently I've learned to say "no, I can't do that any more." DUH!Also will admit to a certain amount of chagrin when I realized my being able to avoid addictions had more to do with my control issues than anything more high minded. Ah well . . . :-D

Yay! I agree, the Scorpio part of me won't let me get over-dependent on anything and, on the other hand, my Mars in Libra is the king of moderation. I have no interest in losing control, I guess I anticipate the consequences of what I do (too much perhaps) and hangovers are no fun (I imagine) :D
