Observations: More on Mars Retrograde in Virgo

© Vladimir Hroch | Dreamstime.com

As Mars moves deeper into its retrograde period, I’m getting more feedback on the effect it is having. Personally I noticed it the most when it triggered my natal Mars-Uranus inconjunct, mostly because my Mars conjoins my Mercury and Ascendant. The affect on the affairs of the house it is transiting is indirect as in less time at my computer.

It seems to be hitting those with mutable Rising signs and planets in the mutable signs in the first house the hardest. In general mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) are more vulnerable to stress which often affects their nervous systems in some way. Mars is an energetic, active force and in Virgo tends to get too caught up in minutiae to suit action oriented Mars. Being forced to a crawl by stationing retrograde really annoyed Mars, with unhappy results for those people with Mars transits to their first house or Ascendant.

Stress related illness or injuries are possible, often the result of an existing weakness in the system being repeatedly pressured by overuse. Carpel tunnel is an example of this kind of problem. Lots of folks are suffering from viruses causing colds or flu like symptoms. Their immune systems were weakened from overdoing it in some way. If Mars is heading back to hit a sensitive point in your chart, please do all those good things for your health like getting enough sleep, eating right and avoiding as much stress as possible.

Mars is currently at 17° Virgo Rx and will go back to 3° Virgo before stationing direct on 13 April so this is not going away anytime soon. Now that the Mercury-Mars opposition is waning, there are no other irritating aspects for a few weeks. Hopefully this will make life a little easier for everyone.

Mercury in Pisces is taking its turn aspecting my Mars/Mercury/Uranus inconjunct the last couple of days and disrupting my schedule. I spent the better part of the day yesterday helping my Aries on a bath remodel he’s doing. I got to spread stinky construction adhesive on the wall and was just getting the hang of it after doing the fourth panel.

I chose a serene view for this post as a calming influence. :D

Indeed this transit really bites. Unfortunately for me, I have Virgo in my 5th house of creativity which makes me perfectionist in any artistic medium I try. Mars rx is emphasizing this tendency. I start something and toss it aside in disgust a few minutes later. Every line is off-kilter and shapes are crooked or distended. Argh! 2 more months of this! :( I’m more content to organize my supplies and look at others’ work in the same media.

Incidentally I notice there are no flower essences intended for self-directed perfectionism– just for criticism directed at others for their flaws and failings!

Unfortunately your reasoning is excellent! Mars in Virgo is very discerning when it comes to what constitutes good craftsmanship. Retrograde often means having to go back and redo something to get it right. I have found myself tearing out & reknitting projects all too often during Mars Rx.

Have you tried Rock Water or Beech flower remedies?

This Mars Rx period is driving me batty because everything I try to do gets stalled by someone else delaying things! But I’ve made sure to simply ask questions about the delays without reacting in anger, and some interesting replies have come up.

I’m also sick of people now misusing anger, especially in the realm of verbal abuse. I am refusing to be anybody’s punching bag under this transit! I’m simply hoping these people either reap what they sow (Virgo) in those actions, or at least when Mars goes Direct, realize what they have done and have to deal with their own bad feelings over doing irreparable damage to a friendship. I have also had some near-accidents involving fire multiple times in the past few weeks. I probably need to “slow down.”

I do have something positive to say about Mars Rx though: things I am working on are taking some paths that I didn’t notice before, in good ways. I’ve learned I can’t shoot for the straight and narrow during a Mars Rx period, and that excites me! Mars Rx seems to bring up new adventures that have already been there but have been hidden for whatever reason.

If you have a natal Mars-Uranus aspect (or your Mars is under a Uranus transit), slowing down is a very good plan. Otherwise you seem to understand just what works best for you. I’m impressed! :)

Hmmm not sure it is Mars Rx or another transit. It is in my 8th house or 9th house if whole signs are used. Recently learned about whole signs and wish that little disccovery stayed hidden! At any rate, big family stuff up. This week felt like a breakup! Big big heartache with lots of tears at the realization that things are not likely to change. Im a stranger in my own familly and there is a norm in place to keep that intact. Lots of disappointment, but now it is time to put on the big girl pants and walk on.

LOL! One of the reasons I have stayed with Koch Houses for those born 45° or more North & Placidus for those born south of there. Astrology is a big, messy field of interest with tons of distracting bits & pieces.

{{{{Debbie}}}} Mars Rx did trigger your natal Mars sq Uranus/Ceres/Pluto but I’m more inclined to see Saturn in Libra as the culprit triggering your natal Moon-Jupiter-Neptune T-Square whilst conjunct your South Node. Saturn is very good at stripping away Neptune’s illusions and the Moon usually says those involve family. Be kind to yourself as you heal.

I am finding this Retrograde period ‘interesting’ i checked the last time Mars was retrgrade in Virgo and it was 1995, that was a huge year for me, and included surgery….so am hoping thats not the case this time! I have mars virgo in my 5th house, this transit i get in affect 3 Mars returns as it crosses my natal mars 3 times, its trine my moon in 12th, sextile uranus, square neptune rx,and trine chiron. so far its been very enlightening rather then scary, energy not as high though and not so motivated to do soemthings, but more time to let my intuition to be heard so things are flowing…only 2 more to go

Thankfully this is a very different sky than in 1995 and one I hope is kinder to your chart. :P With your natal Mars-Neptune square going with the flow will work. Good luck!

  • I’m actually enjoying this Mars period. I feel creative and more interested in doing things than I have in quite a while. It’s making good aspects in my chart at these degrees whether direct or retrograde. Am I alone with this feeling?

    • Diane L

Hi CJ!! :D Thanks for stopping by!

I delighted to know someone is enjoying this Mars Rx! It hasn’t been too bad for me nor my Aries who has a natal Mars Rx. The issues he’s run into have had more to do with Pluto transiting his 10th . . . even though his ideas for what his remodel clients need to do are probably correct, he still has to do what they want. Lots of mumbling. LOL

      xoxoxo diane~

      • I’m worried I might get blindsided because things seem good. Whazzup with that?! Glad to know things are not too bad at your house. Is that Pluto in the 10th causing craziness in your house? When Pluto hit my Virgo hubby’s Moon on the IC ~ hiyiyi! (It completely disorganized his breakfast. ha! )You wouldn’t believe the long list of “improvements” we had to make to our house.

LOL! Us professional worry warts always do stuff like that!! :D

When it initially hit his MC three years ago & then squared his Aries Sun last year, life was interesting around here. One remodel job after another, the people kept changing their minds or wanted to do things he thought were crazy. Another odd thing he’s run into is people not trusting him at first but after working with him they come around & realize he genuinely has their best interests in mind. :P And he’s about as honest as they come . . .

Yes, I’m finding the Mars retro tough. He’s currently moving backwards through the 12th house (my ascendant is late Virgo) and during his journey back and forth in Virgo he squares Sun, Venus and Merc in Gemini and Chiron in Sag three times in total. So, not exactly a barrel of laughs. He is putting the brakes on my already lengthy and tedious recovery from a serious back condition (which has coincided with the Neptune/Chiron transit).

Really, the only solution is to surrender to it (12th house) and try not to fall into the trap of self sabotage.

I’m certainly learning patience. I’m not sure what I would do without astrology, and the knowledge and understanding of the cycles of life that it brings.

Back conditions take a LONG time to heal, especially if there is damage to the connective tissue or bone. Muscle usually heals fairly quickly but the others? Not so much.

Are you under any Saturn transits now? Personal experience says it often takes a year or more to see lasting results. :(

      Take care & stay strong!

  • Mars rx in Virgo has been strange. I feel like there are a lot of balls in the air (who threw them?) falling in slow motion, and I don’t know which ones to catch first. Will they all rain on my head when Mars goes direct? Or should I find a net and scoop them all up!? :D

Hi Diane. Thanks for your kind words. This bout of back trouble started when Saturn was transiting my 12th in 2009 and continued as it crossed the Ascendant into Libra. Saturn has since transited natal Neptune (ruler of 6th)and the Sth Node (it will be returning to the SN twice this year). I have natal Sun sq Saturn and opposite Chiron and this has added to the saturnine effect, methinks! I’m looking forward to his departure later in the year, and also of the transiting Sth Node from Gemini ….

Ouch! My Aries lives with an iffy back (several bulging discs) and found physical therapy most effective, followed by exercises to strengthen the core muscles. The most frustrating part of any injury to connective tissue is they heal so incredibly slowly and consequently are sensitive to be re-injured. Walking usually helps too.

Saturn transits to the first seem to fit the slow, steady healing pattern with consistent routine diet & exercises. It takes one moment (Uranus) to cause the problem and months to recover (Saturn). :(

  • mm

Diane. Absolutely. Slow and steady is the motto. Walking is great and cranial osteopathic treatment has helped enormously as well. But the confusion and flare-ups of Mars retro in 12th is asking me – at the least for these few months – to let go of the end result. As a Moon in Aries person this does not come naturally! Thanks again for your encouragment.
