Observations: What’s Your Mercury Style?

© Stephanie Pui-Mun Law

It’s officially Gemini season with both the Sun and Mercury in the sign of the twins, so a discussion about Mercury is appropriate! The sign your Mercury is in plus how it is aspected offer insights into our personal Mercury style.

If you have Mercury in one of the air signs (Gemini, Libra or Aquarius) the odds are good you are intellectually inclined and enjoy discussing all kinds of things except perhaps emotional issues. Fire sign Mercurys (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) are more spontaneous and can fire off opinions before checking the facts . . . something you probably won’t find the earth sign Mercurys (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) doing. They do not like to look foolish. Water sign Mercurys (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) tend to be the most intuitive and the best at going with their “gut”.

If your Mercury conjoins your Sun, known as Combust, you are usually good at concentrating but tend to be on the subjective side. This is a frequent occurrence because Mercury is usually within 30 degrees of the Sun. When the Moon aspects Mercury, our emotions tend to influence our thinking and Venus blesses Mercury with sweetness and charm. Mars in aspect to Mercury can come across as aggressive and sharp tongued whilst Jupiter makes Mercury a better story teller (a polite way of saying this combo exaggerates).

Of the outer planets, Saturn can stifle Mercury, particularly during childhood, whilst as adults those with Saturn-Mercury aspects have excellent memories and a knack for explaining things clearly. Neptune-Mercury aspects are wonderfully creative, slightly daft or factually challenged . . . take your pick. There is little doubt Uranus gives Mercury brilliance but also reduces the ability to stay focused and on task. The mind can move faster than the tongue at times with Uranus aspects. The ability to focus is seldom a problem for those with Pluto aspecting their Mercury . . . it’s diverting the mind from its current obsession that can be the problem!

My Mercury is in Scorpio conjunct Mars and inconjunct Uranus in Mercury ruled Gemini. I have good concentration skills except when I don’t, if that makes sense. Generally my Pluto ruled Mercury prefers to be in control and carefully edits my communications but occasionally Uranus kicks in and I babble . . . one of the reasons I avoid intoxicants as a rule. Right now Venus Rx in Gemini is conjoining my natal Uranus and triggering that inconjunct and my concentration is all over the place!

What’s your Mercury style? What sign is it in and how is it aspected?

Mercury in Virgo conjunct Venus/Pluto and sextile Jupiter and Neptune in Scorpio. Yeah, I can naturally do the picky details and focus, even with aspects from Neptune (and, at least so far, even with Neptune transiting opposite). Not sure Venus adds charm since it’s conjoined Pluto, but it helps me craft appealing and persuasive writing for my clients. We’ve already discussed obsession in an earlier post!

      Hey Les!

      I think that’s a very good thing and a real talent! :D

  • Mercury in scorp conjunct pluto in scorp conjunct sun in…libra? All in the 12th? MADNESS. You might say i’ve suffered from obsessing over one too many relationships, losing identity and falling out of life… but only if i’m not obsessing over art and trying to get a career thereof (much better option). THe point is, I NEED something to obsess over, to go deep into (scorp). And if it isn’t art it will be people and boys (libra) and thats just crappy, no?

I have mercury sextile saturn and saturn sextile mars, no wonder I can’t get my mind off heavy serious things. One track mind is an understatement…one track being is more like it.

I have a hunch that the merc/saturn/mars connection links me to my technical abilities, I am really best at breaking things down mechanically and when it comes to drawing i can look at something and break it into shapes, angles, tone ranges…its like a visual file cabinet. and i thoroughly enjoy being absorbed in it (water!).

However I like to think of merc in water signs as “brain soup”. I often can’t explain how i learn things or where ideas come from. Or how to get them out once they’re swimming in there. “i know it but i just can’t explain” is something I say a lot.

I just sort of drink information, if i’m very interested.

obviously if emotions or obsessions are involved said information is now a part of me, usually for good. because of my interest in astrology, i nary forget a birthday, going back to when i was 13 i can spout of everyone i know’s birthday ad nauseum!

      Hey orianaaa! :D

Obsessing over Art is faaaaaar better than some man . . . at least in my opinion!

Wow! What a fantastic ability for an artist or a mechanic for that matter. Sometimes the two are one and the same. Ever think of doing constructions of some kind?

This has 12th house Mercury (or Mercury in Pisces) written all over it. I’m good at intuitive leaps and surprisingly good at going back and filling in the blanks . . . do it all the time as an astrologer. Maybe it helps to have Mars in Scorpio conj my Mercury. My Mercury also is Occidental (sun rises well ahead of Mercury) – somewhat detached and analytical.

I may not remember everyone’s birth date but I seldom forget a person’s sign! LOL

I have Mercury retrograde in Cancer, conjunct Sun and Saturn, opposite the Moon, inconjunct Neptune and square Pluto. I was a very shy child, gradually becoming a more confident communicator as I get older, but definitely an introvert. I find fast paced conversations and hectic social environments often hard to deal with – I’m one of those people who always thinks of the right thing to say when it’s too late! I like communicating in writing – much prefer email to phone conversations because it gives me time to think of the right words. I can get very obsessed with particular subjects and love anything fantastical and highly imaginative – books, films and art.

So glad you have been able to gradually become a more confident communicator. Between Saturn conj your Sun & Mercury plus Cappy Moon, you do have plenty of Saturn influences at work in your chart! :P

My 12th House Mercury does not enjoy fast paced communications or hectic social situations either. And I COMPLETELY understand your preference for written communications! :) We do live in a fast paced society, not easy for those of us who prefer a slower pace.

Cancer mercury retrograde here! Definitely feel-y, emotional and sensitive. Everything is about feelings for me.
Mercury square Aries Moon – more feel-y!
Mercury conjunct Midheaven – thinking about goals and achievement.
Mercury conjunct Leo sun – thinking about my ego:-/
Mercury square Aries north node – thinking about my purpose & growth.
Mercury square Scorpio pluto – focus, passion and obsession.
Mercury trine Pisces jupiter – compassion, optimism, intuition.

With all the squares my poor mercury takes I definitely have difficulty communicating, it’s very frustrating! And with Chiron in Gemini to boot, I wish more than anything that I was an excellent communicator, engaging & funny!

You’re right . . . that’s a lot of squares to your Mercury. :P If your Mercury conjoins your Sun, is your Sun also part of those squares? At least your Sun & Moon are both in fire signs, that has to help. Do you do yoga or meditate? Practices to calm the mind & emotions could be helpful for you.

Thanks Diane! I have not set up a regular yoga or meditation practice for myself; but when I do commit to doing these activities I feel much calmer and more present. That is something I need to work on.
I also have Venus virgo in a grand cross with chiron/jupiter/uranus. So yeah, big nervous worry wort over here! I’ve been using the Source Natural’s brand GABA Calm sublingual tablets to help with anxiety and it helps a lot. But I have been interested in getting into a regular yoga routine as well, so thanks for the suggestion!

My Mercury is in Scorpio conj Sun in Libra, Uranus in Libra, Mars in Libra and Venus in Libra all in the 11th house! At times I feel that I communicate clearly and deliberately and at times I waffle (probably more often than not :) ).

I actually enjoy light-hearted, positive and fun conversations so Mercury in Scorpio is kind of confusing me. I guess it also depends on the other aspects.

With that much Libra, especially if your Venus also conjoins your Libra Sun, it doesn’t surprise me you prefer to keep things pleasant. Mercury in Scorpio is often soft spoken & can use silence very effectively to let their displeasure be known. I know those with Mercury conj Mars in Libra who love nothing better than a good debate.

  • Rekha

I have Mercury in Scorpio conjunct Neptune and conjunct Moon.
I definitely feel vibes intensely often while communicating with someone. I think that Mercury in Scorpio is rather deep and insightful. Its unpleasant side is that it wants to strike back at difficult people like a scorpion! That’s when I need to recruit Sun and Venus in Sagittarius to lighten things up and look at the big picture.

Good for knowing when someone is lying to you though Moon conj Neptune can cause confusion because it is too easy to absorb what others are feeling. Yes, you do need your bright, upbeat Sagittarius Sun-Venus to keep things in perspective. :P
