Observations: Richard Armitage, Leo Extraordinaire

Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield

My husband took me to see The Hobbit over the Christmas holidays, something I enjoyed very much being a big Tolkien fan. In this movie, Bilbo Baggins sets off on an adventure with a group of dwarves to help them regain their lost city full of treasures stolen many years ago by the dragon, Smaug. It was when the leader of the dwarves, Thorin, made his entrance I set up and took notice because he had a seriously regal presence.

Thorin is played by British actor, Richard Armitage, a fine looking man and excellent actor. Of course, I had to look up his birth data [22 August 1971, Huncote, UK] and found out Richard has a Leo Sun, perfect for playing royalty. Even better his Venus is in Leo and closely conjoined his Sun. Venus-Sun conjunctions almost always have a way of drawing the eye but in Leo the attraction is magnetic.

His ability to get into character is enhanced by an out-of-sign Neptune-Sun square and he reportedly said he tends to get so caught up in his roles, it can be difficult to go back to just being himself. Jupiter in Scorpio also squares his Leo Sun-Venus, making it easy to project a larger than life image, both on screen and off if he so chooses. Those with Neptune aspecting the Sun can also fade into the background surprisingly well.

Adding to his personal magnetism is an exact semi-sextile from Pluto in Virgo to his Sun-Venus. This aspect also comes in handy when playing darker roles. With both his Moon and Mercury in detail oriented Virgo, I would imagine he tends to obsess over every single little detail when perfecting his character. Mercury is squared by Saturn in Gemini which can result in self censuring because of a need to say exactly the right thing.

His Mars is in Aquarius and trine Uranus in Libra, blessing him with excellent reflexes and making him a quick study when learning physical skills. He did look quite comfortable playing the action scenes, swinging a large sword!

It was a pleasure to watch Richard as Thorin Oakenshield and I’m looking forward to seeing the second and third movies in this series. Perhaps this role will bring him much deserved recognition as playing Aragon in The Fellowship of the Ring brought another favorite actor of mine, Viggo Mortensen, a fellow Libra.

Definitely my type on the left, not so much on the right. :)

I think this goes for Mercury opp Saturn in Gemini, also. I’ve always been picky about spelling and grammar when writing, and when talking about deep, complicated subjects (which I do a lot of anyway), I seem to be stretching my words out, deliberating, searching for the right expression, the right turn of phrase, etc. Seems to bother some people– “Just spit it out!” At the same time Gemini wants to do exactly that, so there’s this tension between the restraint and the impulse to communicate.

Also, since my hearing changed for the better, I’ve made a point of enunciating better, even saying a word again if I notice I slurred it. Another great reason astrology has helped increase comfort in my own skin, knowing how I’m wired and why I might do this or that.

      Hi Joe!

Excellent feedback! I really, really appreciate your thoughtful insights . . . make my job easier!

And nobody thinks of the actor who played Bilbo!

Ive seen and red about what people think about Richard and his magnetism. I went to see the movie with 5 other people ( mostly men) and all of them couldn’t stop talking about him.
All I could think. ” but what about Bilbo?? Does nobody get what he is all about? his meek and tender heart ??? I loved that actor in Hichikers guide to the galaxy:)

      Welcome Alden!

And nobody thinks of the actor who played Bilbo!

Not true! I am a big fan of Martin Freeman & plan on doing a post on him too. He is a wonderful example of Sun conj Venus in kindly Virgo and perfect for playing Bilbo the Hobbit. Interestingly enough, he & Richard Armitage are the same age w/their birth dates only a couple of weeks apart.

Martin is fabulous as Watson in the BBC series Sherlock too.
