Observations: Pluto Thoughts for the Day

© Stephanie Pui-Mun Law

With a delicious Full Moon in Scorpio tomorrow, I got to thinking about Pluto, Scorpio’s ruler, and how we end up manifesting some of his delightful issues in our natal charts.

One of the common themes for most of us with strong Pluto natal signatures is control, of others, ourselves, our environments, etc. When I meet people with what is politely called “control issues” these days, I immediately wonder what Pluto is doing in their natal charts. Often he is conjunct the Ascendant or in hard aspect to the Luminaries. Everyone has Pluto somewhere but he has to prominent to be noticeable. It takes an aspect to the personal planets or Angles to force us to deal with Pluto because as a transpersonal planet he is very “other” and difficult to relate to.

I suppose having sextiles and trines does dilute Pluto’s stamp on us to a degree. The reason I say this is because I have a Moon-Pluto sextile and still notice the need to be in control of my emotions. It takes careful monitoring of my feelings to recognize when I’m shoving them down rather than dealing with them. (Neptune conjunct my Moon is NO help at all . . .)

Both of my step-daughters have Pluto in Libra, one has Pluto in her first house trine her Mercury and the other has Pluto conjunct the Ascendant square her Cappy Moon. It is very clear who is in charge in their marriages, particularly in the second case. She chose a very nice man who pretty much lets her run the whole show. You would not believe what his mother is like (she has yet to acknowledge her daughter-in-law’s existence . . . seriously!) The other day both families were visiting and when they left, both women were driving which about says it all.

It has occurred to me what happened when the girls were living with their bi-polar mother during their teen years brought out the need for control as adults. We are only now finding out how rough it was for them and how many responsibilities they assumed. At the time the grandparents flat refused to acknowledge their daughter had mental health problems. It was a sad, desperate time for the girls and I’m amazed how well they are doing now. So many secrets (Pluto) keep from their father and I, preventing us from helping out.

By the way, their dad has a Moon-Pluto trine and a Mars-Pluto square. The man definitely is one of the control issue group but he tends to be harder on himself than others. Their mom doesn’t have any major Pluto aspects although I suspect she has a Moon-Neptune square.

By the way, attempting to restrict or control uncertainties in our lives is very human and nothing to be ashamed of . . . one more reason to be kind and forgiving of our selves. Anyone else relate to this?

Observations: Out-of-Sign Aspects – when a Square is less Square

© George Cannon – ImageGuy

First off, I have to say right up front out-of-sign aspects annoy the heck out of me. What are they? Here is a nice, polished definition from Wikipedia I rather like:

In astrology, a dissociate aspect (also known as an out-of-sign aspect) is an astrological aspect, such as a conjunction, opposition, trine, square, or quincunx, that is within its allowable orb, but out of its designated sign.

I happen to have two of them natally – a Sun-Saturn square between my Sun in Libra and Saturn in Leo; a Sun-Jupiter conjunction with Jupiter in Scorpio. Leo and Libra are compatible signs in friendly elements, fire and air; Libra and Scorpio not so much because air and water have little common ground.

Yes, I do feel the pressure and tension of Saturn squaring my Sun and guilting me when I fail to live up to my responsibilities. How can I tell? It is the sense of relief and relaxation I feel when I finish my “chores”. What I believe compatible signs do to a dissociate aspect is soften the impact to a degree.

Even though Jupiter in Scorpio is firmly in my twelfth house and my Libra Sun is poised on the cusp, I still have more than a touch of Jupiter’s optimism lurking about in my being. My bouts of depressions tend to have a natural bottom and then I bounce back, ready to look on the bright side in the morning. Judging from those I know with same sign Jupiter-Sun conjunctions, mine is toned down considerably. I’m sure my Sun-Jupiter conjunction falling in the twelfth house plus Jupiter in private Scorpio is a big factor too.

Using a tighter orb than usual for these aspects is a good idea, particularly for planets other than the luminaries. I’d say 3 to 4 degrees at the most. When these aspects show up in synastry, I tighten the orb even more with the exception of intra-aspects where the same two planets from both charts aspect each other. Intra-aspects seem to concentrate the energy of the planets involved allowing them a larger sphere of influence.

Please keep in mind astrology is not only a science but an art and what works for one astrologer may not for another. I know astrologers who go strictly by the numbers with great results but not me. What I feel happens when a planet changes from one sign to the next is like a different colored filter is imposed over the energy streaming from the planet. A red Aries filter is quite different from sea green Pisces, isn’t it?

**Commercial Break** Remember to check out my Personal Reports page. I offer reports on your natal chart, transits & progressions and several synastry reports. Because all my reports are completely written by me they take longer to produce. I’m also more than willing to work with you to tailor your report for your needs.

Observations: Natal Inconjuncts & Non-standard Solutions

© Stephanie Pui-Mun Law

Last week Mars in Virgo made the first of three passes to the closest aspect in my natal chart, an inconjunct between Uranus in Gemini and Mars/Mercury in Scorpio. Mars in Virgo is sextile to my Mars/Mercury in Scorpio but squares Uranus in Gemini, the other end of this inconjunct. Another factor is Mars/Mercury also conjoins my Ascendant from the twelfth house side.

All of us who have inconjuncts involving the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) natally are challenged because there is simply no easy way to resolve the issues represented by the signs connected by this aspect. What I finally realized is the best outcome is often non-standard. In other words, we add 2 + 2 and come up with 5 . . . and it works for us.

Natal Yods with two inconjuncts focusing on one planet are the most challenging because they are relentless in forcing the individual to deal with the reality the conventional approach often fails to produce the desired result. The Sun as the apex says be yourself regardless, the Moon says please accept your emotional response is atypical, Mercury means your thinking process is decidedly different, Venus hints your style is out of sync with the current mode and Mars says the way you get things done is effective but unique!

For instance, my inconjunct directly affects my physical well-being and since I enjoyed good health most of my adult life (thanks to Mars conjunct the ASC), it wasn’t until the last few years that I began to realize I needed to be very proactive in assessing and dealing with my health concerns. Treating digestive issues with the standard products to reduce stomach acid no longer worked and I went to a naturopath who recommended adding more HCL, which did help. Because I’m the sort who always wants to know “why”, I asked but didn’t get any helpful answers from the doctors. Eventually my own research led me to believe most of my health issues were related to menopause and the subsequent drop in estrogen. About three months ago, I started taking a low dose, topical estrogen product . . . and it was enough to kick start my stomach into producing HCL once more. None of the doctors I saw told me to expect this. Thinking outside the conventional approach (Uranus inconjunct Mercury) produced the best results but if I didn’t trust my own process the outcome may not have been as good.

For artists, musicians and writers, having a natal inconjunct can be great. It helps them express their creativity in new and interesting ways. They are also good at turning mistakes into opportunities and using flaws constructively.

The inconjunct is less common than the five major aspects (conjunctions, sextiles, trines, squares and oppositions) but it packs a big punch if you have one or two. I feel it is very important for those of us who live with this awkward aspect to cherish our uniqueness and remember to respect what works for us even if it is non-standard.

Merry Christmas to all!

© Diane Lang

Wishing everyone a spectacular and delightful Christmas! May we all enjoy a renewed sense of peace and prosperity as Jupiter in Taurus stations direct today. Great Christmas gift to all.

Speaking of Jupiter, my rather substantial elf has Jupiter in Aries conjunct his Mars! He is going to be one big guy when he grows up . . . already off to a great start.  Check out those elf ears too.  :D

Observations: Venus square Jupiter – Too Much of the Good Stuff?

© Milkovasa | Dreamstime.com

On the Solstice, Venus in Aquarius was exactly square Jupiter in Taurus and it turned we had a family gathering the evening before. One of our conversations was about indulging ourselves by eating foods our bodies will not tolerate, i.e. dairy products when one is lactose intolerant. My nephew does this all the time because he loves good food and loves to eat. I checked his chart and found a tight square between his Venus and Jupiter! This lead to more digging in my astro-database and I found the outlines of a pattern suggesting a connection between Jupiter in hard aspect to Venus and a tendency to indulge the senses with unpleasant consequences.

I see a difference between these behaviors and Neptune related addictive behaviors though there is often some Neptune action in the natal charts of those who are unable to resist pleasurable but damaging behaviors. What Neptune aspects add is denial and unless we admit we’re seriously screwing up, we’re stuck! This particular can of worms I’m familiar with due to a semi-sextile between my Jupiter and Venus plus Moon conjunct Neptune . . . bleh. I can and have pushed my limits over the years though it was sweets and cigarettes rather than drugs or alcohol. However, repeated Saturn transits to the Moon, Venus and Jupiter gradually sorted me out and now my “no” works much better . . . not perfect by any means but better.

On Christmas Day Venus will be squaring my natal Jupiter triggering the natal semi-sextile. **sigh** I’m already giving myself a pep talk in advance. Anyone else have ideas/feedback on their natal Venus-Jupiter aspect and the tendency to overdo the good stuff?
