Observations: Mercury Rx + Uranus Whiplash

The sudden reversals of direction around me during this Mercury Retrograde have been exhausting . . . and as those of you who read here know, I have too much in fixed signs to find the unexpected exhilarating. Besides, I’m too damn old to enjoy change for the sake of change. That’s for the young and hardy, not the old and creaky.

Uranus in Aries is within a degree of my husband’s Sun and I can’t begin to keep up all his shifts in direction. First he decided we needed to buy a new used SUV to replace my aging Nissan pickup. I said OK and started doing the necessary research, checking Autotrader.com and Consumer Reports for reliable, affordable vehicles. Once we found out it would cost a minimum of $10,000 for anything worth getting, and those SUVs all had well over 100,000 miles on them, plans changed . . . abruptly. He decided it made more sense to spend $3,500+ to overhaul my pickup for now, and wait another 5-6 years for the used hybrid SUVs to come down in price.

Something I’ve noticed over the years when dealing with Mr. Uber Aries is when he’s amped up and charging around, I become more and more passive. It’s the Libra urge to bring balance to the energy in their partnerships at work. Right now I’m feeling even more passive than usual due to an exact square of Neptune in Pisces to my first house Venus . . . passive and rather ineffectual. Neptune squaring my Venus also increases my general sensitivity to disruption and drama too. Not good for standing up for myself at all. It will be interesting to see what happens next week on the Full Moon in Libra when the mutable T-Square with Venus in Gemini, Mars in Virgo and Neptune in Pisces smacks my Venus in Sagittarius. I doubt if it will make me more assertive . . . mutable signs are noted more for evading confrontation than seeking it out.

This photo was taken the summer of 1968 when Uranus and Pluto were traveling together in Virgo across my tenth house. At that time Saturn was in Aries opposing my Moon and Neptune in Scorpio was sitting exactly on my Ascendant. I didn’t have a CLUE about what I wanted to do. I had changed my course of study at University several times already and still had no clear direction. No wonder it took me ten years to get any kind of a degree. Crazy times. By the way, those two guys are coworkers of mine in Yellowstone Nat’l Park, one on the left was a Vietnam vet and slightly wacko, the other was a student. We were so darn young . . . I was just 21 at the time.

Observations: Uranus as Savior

© Stephanie Pui-Mun Law

In my post earlier in the week on On Being an Emotional Chameleon, I talked about some of my own struggles with Neptune/twelfth house influences in my natal chart. My Libra friend Oriana’s remarks in the comments about Uranus helping her reminded me of how Uranus can help counteract Neptune’s influences.

Uranus has a reputation for bringing out the rebellious side and encouraging people to be extremely independent, sometimes to the point of ridiculousness. However for those folks who tend to go overboard on the self-sacrificing side, a dose of Uranus can be an excellent antidote. Not only is Uranus trine my Moon-Neptune and my Sun, giving me a sturdy sense of independence underneath my Libra need to get along; it also is tightly inconjunct my Mercury/ASC. I have always had a contrary streak as my family can testify. *grin*

Around the time I was in the process of recovering from my worst relationship ever, Uranus was busy crossing my Mercury and Ascendant. Believe me, there is NOTHING like Uranus transiting the Ascendant and first house to spur one’s drive for freedom and autonomy! It was like a veil was ripped away displaying my Uranuian side for everyone to see. My family wasn’t all that surprised but plenty of friends and acquaintances were because they primarily saw the nice Libra girl with her first house Venus.

The bottom line was if Uranus hadn’t come to my rescue and reminded me to look after myself, it would have taken much longer for me to wake up and escape Neptune’s illusions. The mother of my alcoholic boyfriend was doing her best to get me to take over and continue enabling him in his self-destructive ways. I just shudder when I recall our conversations. It was a year after we parted company I moved out of state for about six years under a Uranus in Sagittarius transit first to my Venus and then my South Node in Sagittarius. Best thing I ever did for myself.

Finding a balance between Neptune’s capacity for selfless giving and Uranus’s demands for perfect autonomy seems impossible at times but it is somewhere between the two extremes most of us live. We need Uranus to teach us to stay true to ourselves and Neptune to show us the value of caring for others. Also good to remember if we don’t tend to our own health and well being, our ability to help others will be seriously limited.

Observations: On Being An Emotional Chameleon

© Stephanie Pui-Mun Law

For those of us with natal Moon/Neptune aspects or Moon in Pisces, it is far too easy to bend ourselves all out of shape to become our lover’s ideal partner. When you have a Libra Moon like I do and are highly motivated to be in a relationship, the temptation to adapt is powerful indeed.

Moon-Neptune aspects are a two-edged sword because whilst they give compassion and sensitivity to others, the same qualities can lead to misplaced nurturance and turning relationships into rescue missions. Perhaps if I had been less Libra, I would have chosen to dedicate my life to helping others through traditional twelfth house avenues, working within the system in one way or another.

Before my first Saturn Return, I honestly didn’t have a clue about how to be myself in a relationship. Pleasing the man in my life was my priority. I know it sounds insane and it was . . . not to mention exceedingly painful over the long term. There were some lines I did refuse to cross though. I did know myself well enough to reject being part of an open relationship out of hand. By my mid-twenties I had wised up enough to put finishing my degree ahead of following some man around but it took some hard core lessons around the time of my Saturn Return for me to get serious.

What inspired me to heal myself was answering a simple question: What would my perfect partner and our relationship look like? At the time I was involved with an alcoholic who stole from me, hit me, trashed my home and generally left me feeling exhausted and angry all the time. Learning about the extreme importance of setting boundaries was a life saver. Choosing to live alone for awhile was also very, very helpful for defining my own emotional shape. I still need more “alone time” than most to stay on track. This is not about being “selfish”, this about staying sane – pure and simple.

One of Neptune’s gifts is creativity and almost everyone I know with Neptune flavored Moons are talented in one way or another. They write, paint, dance, make music or have some other form of artistic expression. In order to exercise our creative gifts, we need the time and space in our lives to do so. If you need a reason to get to work on learning your emotional shape, that’s a good one because not being to express our creativity is not an option, is it.

Observations: Synastry of Aries Boy & Libra Girl with Outer Planets involved

When the outer planets make their presence known in synastry, what starts out as a sweet relationship can turn murky and challenging quickly. In the case of this Libra girl and Aries boy, they both came into this world with serious outer planet aspects natally. She has Pluto in Scorpio conjoining her Libra Sun and an out-of-sign Libra Moon-Sagittarius Neptune square to contend with, and he has his Aries Sun opposed by Pluto in Libra conjunct Saturn in Scorpio plus his Pisces Moon square to Neptune in Sagittarius. I’m going to call this a “karmic” relationship, not as in past lives but as in a relationship that forces us to learn more about ourselves.

I will start by looking at how the basic elements in their charts connect by sign, often a surprisingly accurate way to evaluate compatibility. Starting with the luminaries – his Aries Sun opposes her Libra Moon and her Libra Sun is inconjunct his Pisces Moon. Oppositions between the Sun and Moon in opposite sex couples usually works out quite well because it works with the natural polarity and our expectations of the differences between the sexes.

The Libra-Pisces inconjunct also occurs between the Moons. Libra and Pisces both prefer peace and harmony in their relationships and in their homes, so they usually work harder at getting along than more contentious combinations . . . like Capricorn and Leo.

Now the opposition between her Mercury in Scorpio and his Taurus Mercury could be more of a challenge, mostly due to the tendency of fixed sign Mercurys to take a position and not budge. However, since both Libra and Aries Sun folk do enjoy a good debate now and then, having opposite Mercurys may not be an issue. A couple of Mercury intra-aspects, one with Uranus and the other with Mars, suggest these two really do enjoy tossing ideas around together and find these exchanges very stimulating.

If attraction and passion was only based on Venus and Mars, then their chemistry would be OK but not fantastic. Her Capricorn Mars does make a lovely trine to his Venus in sensual Taurus but her Sagittarius Venus is a little free-wheeling and flirtatious for his slow to react Mars in Taurus. When it comes to working together as a team, their earth sign Mars do very, very well with a shared sense of timing and endurance.

Moving on to other elements in their synastry that both complicate matters and why they were attracted to one another initially. They have three powerful conjunctions between their charts: his Saturn-Pluto conjoins her Sun-Pluto; his Venus-Chiron conjoins her North Node/Descendant; his Neptune-South Node conjoins her Neptune. Most of the burden of these aspects falls on Libra girl who also had Saturn in Libra transiting over her Libra stuff for a couple of years. Yes, lots of hard, hard lessons learned through her relationships.

There is little doubt in my mind this has been a deeply transformative relationship for Libra girl as that is the nature of Pluto in synastry after all. Pluto has a way of binding us together whilst healing through pain. The bottom line with Pluto’s lessons is acceptance of who we are, warts and all, without judgment or expectations. Seems simple, doesn’t it? NOT!! This is a process, a long process requiring plenty of forgiveness and the willingness to keep chipping away. Fortunately Libra girl with her natal Sun-Pluto conjunction and other Scorpio planets has the means to do this.

Aspects to the Nodes in synastry often bring a sense of recognition when meeting one another AND the feeling we are obligated to help each other in some way. Having Neptune and Chiron present definitely complicates matters because Neptune brings boundary issues and denial on board whilst Chiron adds deep, un-healing wounds. Frankly I see this as a “no win” scenario. Most of us have enough difficulty dealing with our own problems without taking on someone else’s.

An important parallel between their charts is both have Moon square Neptune – a very idealistic aspect and one that makes it far too easy to absorb other people’s emotions. Aries boy’s situation is complicated by his Moon being in Neptune-ruled Pisces, and Libra girl’s by a twelfth house Sun, Pluto, Mercury and Saturn. The inclination towards self-sacrificing behaviors is very strong in these two which may be fine for the monastic life but very, very tricky to handle for a couple of artist/musicians.

The sweet aspects between their charts involve Jupiter. Her Jupiter is trine his Mercury and Venus whilst his Jupiter falls in her first house. Plus they have a Mars-Jupiter intra-aspect (same planets aspecting each other from both charts). Jupiter brings warmth, camaraderie and inspires generosity, all the best ingredients for friendship. We usually are genuinely delighted to see people with whom we share Jupiter aspects in synastry. The Mars-Jupiter aspects also heat up the chemistry between them.

Both will be heading into their Saturn Returns over the next year or so . . . always an important transition. Libra girl has a head start on this because Saturn in Libra has conjoined both her Sun and Moon. Saturn is often an effective antidote for too much Neptune because it forces us to deal with what is, not just live on hopes and dreams. Time to nurture herself and find less draining ways to help others. I’ve been there, done that and had to learn slowly and painfully about misplaced nurturance and rescue missions instead of honest, equitable partnerships. It can be done . . .

Observations: Mercury Retch Station Frustrations

© Stephanie Pui-Mun Law

Having Mercury conjunct Uranus in Aries leading up to Monday’s station retrograde is turning out to be very frustrating. Uranus always has to be on the cutting edge of things and therefore it’s no surprise to be experiencing typical Mercury Retch stuff early.

Where ever you find 0-6° Aries in your natal chart, or if you have Aries people in your life with planets/Angles at those degrees as I do, that’s where the frustration will stem from. Those degrees happen to fall in my fourth house and turned something fairly simple complex. We had an under-counter light fixture’s bulb go out. It was something we’d put in when we did our kitchen remodel/face lift way back in 2004. My Aries came across these fixtures on one of his remodel jobs. Obviously excellent quality because the daylight bulb lasted eight years! He hands me the bulb and silly me didn’t think to write down the manufacturer or model number . . . NOT on the bulb. Duh. Two weeks and several phone calls later, the bulbs are on order. As for when they may arrive? Jury is still out on that.

Making assumptions when Mercury is stationing and during the time it is retrograde can lead to all kinds of problems. During this Mercury Retrograde in Aries, I can see assumptions being made right and left, especially from now until the time Mercury retreats back into Pisces on 23 March. Don’t forget Mercury will conjoin Uranus on its way back to Pisces on 18 March. Most of my problems with finding a replacement for the stupid light bulb were due to making assumptions . . . so please do as I say, not as I do. Grit your teeth and slow down, OK?

Aries is happiest motoring full speed ahead and with Uranus in Aries now, this effect is magnified. I can hear Libras everywhere groaning at the thought of being yanked off balance again and again by people leaping to conclusions without taking time for careful consideration of all the information. *grin*

I drew The Sun card when asking about dealing with this Mercury Retch period. Guess I need to focus on staying positive and confident or poor reasoning and bad logic will prevail. Not a good outcome. :D
