Observations: Natal Chart as Framework

© Piccaya | Dreamstime.com

With so many, many computer generated astrology reports being offered on the cheap, it is more important than ever to have a solid understanding of our natal charts. The natal chart functions as the framework for transits, synastry with other charts, etc and unless we are familiar with the how our natal charts work, reading cookbook astrology reports often to leads to confusion.

It is not all that hard to identify sensitive degree points either. Look at the personal planets – Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars – and check to see whether those planets form squares, oppositions and inconjuncts particularly to the outer planets – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Conjunctions between the personal planets and the outer planets are also significant.

Say you have your Moon square Saturn natally and Uranus comes along by transit conjoining Saturn. Moon-Saturn aspects often predispose a person to feeling insecure and therefore these folks like to keep emotional disruption and drama to a minimum. Uranus is the ultimate disruptor with a driving need to experience the new and unusual. If you are reading the interpretation for tUranus conjoining nSaturn it doesn’t sound too bad, usually stuff about helping you get out of ruts, break free of old habit patterns and so on. However, tUranus squaring the nMoon is a whole other animal and far more disruptive! Domestic routines can be thrown out of whack; rebellious impulses can be very hard on the personal support system creating all kinds of emotional turmoil. For the person with the natal Moon-Saturn square, this is often a really rough period because they may feel like all their insecure feelings are being trampled on by either their own need for more freedom or someone else’s. If you have been paying attention to the natal Moon-Saturn aspect and have some idea how you respond to feeling like your security needs are threatened, you can address those before the Uranus storm blows in.

Comparing charts to determine compatibility is similar. Say you have a natal Venus square Pluto and the other person’s Moon conjoins your Venus. The interpretive text for Moon conjunct Venus in synastry is very sweet and wonderful but one person’s Pluto squaring the other person’s Moon can be downright nasty with obsessive, jealous behaviors. If it’s your Venus square Pluto, then you may already be aware of being prone to jealousy and can work on understanding why you feel that way in relationships. Being able to deal with your jealousy in a constructive manner will allow you both to enjoy each other’s company without the dark background noise.

Pulling out the patterns in your natal chart and explaining them to you is what a good astrologer can do for you. That way you can take advantage of excellent astrology sites like Astro.com for your day to day transits. If you know one of your “sore thumb” degree points is going to be smacked, you will have a better idea about what to expect as the energy reverberates through you chart via the planets aspecting the one being transited.

This is why I include a look at the natal chart as part of both my synastry and transit reports, and encourage my clients to have the more in-depth natal chart report done for them. Context is everything!

Observations: Projective Chart vs Sensitive Chart

© Susan Seddon-Boulet

Steve Judd wrote a brief post on his blog recently bringing up the notion of those with strong first and second house being more projective in nature, even to the point of being coarse. Whilst those with a powerful Neptune placement are often more sensitive but need to have at least one foot on the ground to achieve their spiritual goals.

This got me to thinking about the differences between my Ram’s chart and mine. He has his Sun, Moon, Mercury and Jupiter in Aries in the first and second houses. You can’t get more projective than that! My chart, on the other hand, has my Sun, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter in the twelfth house with Neptune conjunct my Moon and I readily confess to having to fight hard to keep one foot on the ground. Together we do a decent job of balancing each – his direct, forceful nature counters my tendency to be drifty and I help him be patient and tolerant with other’s shortcomings.

Our synastry reflects this because he has Neptune in his seventh house of partners and his Aries planets all oppose/complement my Libra planets. Of course there are times when he does get carried away and can over-share information I consider private, embarrassing the heck out of me. I annoy him on occasion because I tend to be far less judgmental of people and ascribe their shortcomings to being human beings. In other words, I see shades of grey and he sees black and white. Yeah, sensitive vs. projective!

We keep muddling along and will celebrate our twentieth wedding anniversary this year. Not bad at all!

Observations: “Bad” Charts & Aspects

© Joan Egert | Dreamstime.com

There is no such thing as “bad” or “evil” in astrology and the planets, signs and aspects are essentially neutral. Recently one of my readers posted this in a comment:

I have it in my Sun(Scorpio 29.26) and my Moon(29.52 Cancer). I have read other blogs which claim that those who have Sun and Moon in 29 are “evil” or “bad” and it really bothers me. It is not true!

I agree completely and not just because I too have a 29° Sun. Even allowing plenty of latitude for personal interpretation and preferences, using terms like “bad” or “evil” goes too far in my opinion. It is also easy to overdo it in the other direction and end up in Pollyanna land where everything is all sweetness and light. So Libra says steer clear of extremes and stay open minded.

These days you can calculate an accurate chart for yourself quickly and easily on sites like astro.com. It is learning to accurately interpret that chart that is the challenging part. I’ve been studying charts and astrology for many, many years and still consider myself a student of astrology. Donna Cunningham has some wonderful resources on her site, Skywriter, for both the professional astrologer and the interested beginner.

The interpretation of compatibility or synastry aspects is another area where astrologers wander off the deep end of their personal prejudices. Saturn and Pluto aspects in synastry are often given harsh interpretations, frightening people unnecessarily. I have a number of such synastry aspects with my Ram and we have been happily together for over twenty years. We have a Mars square Pluto intra-aspect (same planets from both charts) and rarely even raise our voices much less resort to physical violence. And yet some astrologers would have you believe Mars-Pluto aspects in synastry are downright nasty. His Saturn conjoins my Moon and even though I occasionally mutter when he adds yet another item to my “to do” list, I still feel loved and supported by him. We also have quite a few traditionally “good” aspects like my Venus trine his Sun and Ascendant. It takes an experienced and impartial eye to sort out synastry aspects and come up with a fair assessment for compatibility.

My rule of thumb is to throw out the extreme interpretations from both ends of the spectrum and go with what’s left. Yes, my Libra need for fairness and moderation is showing but that’s my job! :D

Kate & Wills – a Saturn in Libra Royal Couple

Even though I know hundreds of other astrologers are writing about Kate Middleton and Prince William, I just can’t resist throwing out my thoughts on the synastry of this oh so beautiful young couple. On the surface this appears to be an exceedingly romantic match up of the gorgeous commoner and the handsome prince, the kind of thing romance novelists have been making tons of money off of for years.

With Sagittarius rising and Neptune in Sagittarius conjoining his Ascendant, Prince William easily projects a dashing, devil-may-care image, however he does have his Sun and Moon conjoined in Cancer and deeply cares about home and family as well as the traditions associated with being a member of the royal family. The lovely Kate has her Sun in Capricorn squared by Saturn-Pluto in Libra and I’m sure she is very well aware of what it will mean to be a future queen. Power and social position is something she understands quite well.

At this time, there is no birth time available for Kate and that means no chart wheel or an exact degree for her Moon. Based on the available data, it is possible to say she has her Moon in Cancer in the middle degrees (from about 6-7° to 22-21°). Her Cappy Sun is the only planet in earth and she has a preponderance of planets in air and fire. This means she has a far more assertive nature than receptive and goes after what she wants – a very determined young woman. The ability to charm is shown by her Mercury-Venus conjunction in mental Aquarius. I’m sure she will polish her ability to speak with the press in short order . . .

There is little doubt Prince William is all too aware of his position and responsibilities with Saturn in Libra squaring his North Node in Cancer and South Node in Capricorn. His Sun, Moon and North Node all fall in his seventh house accentuating the influence of Saturn in Libra. For him, it is always about working with others for the greater good and I would guess he has a keen understanding of the fine art of compromise.

It is also worth noting his Venus-Chiron conjunction in Taurus is the apex of a Yod (Finger of God) with Pluto in Libra sextile Neptune in Sagittarius as the base. Venus in aspect to Chiron tends to have doubts about being lovable and in William’s case, he may wonder if he is loved for himself (Venus in Taurus) or for his position (Pluto sextile Neptune – society at large). I suspect this Yod may have something to do with his decision to spend nine years getting to know Kate before popping the question.

Synastry

Using my quick and dirty method of comparing charts, Kate and Wills have a lot going for them. His Sun conjoins her Moon in Cancer and her Sun in Capricorn complements his Moon in Cancer – all good and made better by both of them having Cancer Moons. Cancer is an emotionally sensitive sign and sharing similar ideas of what makes a comfortable home life is important to them.

Wills has Mercury in quick witted Gemini and Kate’s Mercury is in open minded Aquarius in an exact trine in air indicating an easy meeting of the minds.

Both of them have Mars in Libra within a degree even though Kate was born 9 January 1982 and Wills on 21 June 1982 because Mars was retrograde in the intervening months. The benefit of having Mars conjoined is sharing a sense of what it takes to get something done. Both of them have Mars-Mercury trines and I bet this is great for setting the mood as well as enjoying sharp debates on differences in opinion. Her Venus in Aquarius loves all the Mars in Libra action but his Venus in Taurus may prefer less talk and more sensual expressions of affection.

Another element in comparisons I like to look at is the intra-aspects. For those unfamiliar with this term it means the same two planets from both charts in aspect to each other. Kate and Wills have three sets with Mercury: Mercury-Mars, Mercury-Jupiter and Mercury-Uranus. This speaks to me of how important their ability to communicate is to the relationship. Their mental connection is quite strong and they both benefit a great deal from it. Mars keeps things lively, Jupiter offers a shared sense of humor and Uranus encourage both of them to think outside the box, coming up with innovative solutions to long standing problems.

They also have a Sun-Saturn intra-aspect with William’s Saturn squaring Kate’s Sun and her Saturn forming an out-of-sign trine to his Sun. The big deal here is this aspect reinforces Kate’s natal Sun square Saturn-Pluto suggesting she is reminded frequently of the responsibilities and obligations of being involved with a member of England’s royal family. Keep in mind these two have been an item for the better part of nine years . . . a long testing period as it were.

Both of them have Jupiter in Scorpio and both conjoin William’s Midheaven and are trine his Sun and Moon in Cancer. Talk about a high profile couple exemplifying what it means to be rich and famous, not to mention all the royal stuff.

I have to mention they both have Neptune in Sagittarius at 25 degrees conjoining William’s Ascendant and introducing the glamour element. Looking at photos of them as a couple and watching them being interviewed, I was struck by their personal beauty and how lovely a couple they make. It is very likely they will have a lasting romantic aura about them and there won’t be a dry eye in the house at their wedding.

It is within the realm of possibility Kate’s Capricorn Sun and Cancer Moon align with both ends of William’s nodal axis. We will know for sure when her birth time emerges, something bound to happen now the couple is officially engaged. Wouldn’t that be something?!

Synopsis

The feeling I got when studying their charts and the synastry was in Kate William was going with a known quantity, a cautious choice. Their planets from Mars on out are anywhere from exactly conjunct to within seven degrees (both Jupiter and Saturn). Taking into consideration they both have Cancer Moons, they have many parallels between their charts. After enduring the very public breakup of his parent’s marriage and then Diana’s death, I don’t blame Wills for his caution when looking for a partner.

It is also difficult to underestimate the importance of them both having Saturn in Libra encouraging them to take the idea of marriage very seriously. The fact they are getting married the year of their Saturn Return’s hasn’t escaped this astrologer either.

Along with many other astrologers, I will be waiting for the wedding date and hoping Kate’s birth time will show up SOON.

Saturn in Libra Tips: Balance “Work” & Play

After spending the last couple of years hopefully learning important Saturn in Virgo lessons like proper diet and exercise, maintaining a decent daily schedule and always remembering to back up your computer; we are now firmly in Saturn in Libra territory where the lessons are all about doing what it takes to have good, equitable one-on-one relationships.

While Saturn in Libra is pretty serious when it comes to relationships, it is equally important to keep in mind Libra also encourages us to find the moderate, middle ground . . . too much time “working” on our relationships is not the best either.

Knowing Saturn’s penchant for keeping the old nose to the grindstone, we may have to deliberately set aside time with our significant other for relaxation with clear agreements to steer clear of sensitive subjects. Right now with both Venus and Mars in Libra this may be fairly easy but once both of those planets move into Scorpio (who loves to stir the emotional pot) it will take more effort to maintain a balance. If your sweetie stops answering your calls and ignoring your texts, maybe it’s time to back off the heavy discussions for awhile.

As a general rule of thumb, those whose personal planets are in fire and air naturally stay on the lighter side of things; earth signs can take it or leave it and those with water LOVE swimming in the deep end emotionally.

Look to your Moon, its sign and aspects, for further insight into your personal style for handling your feelings as well as all those unconscious daily habit patterns. It can be very helpful to know about your SO’s Moon as well to avoid inadvertently stepping on toes. For example, someone with a Gemini Moon will seek to keep all discussions about feelings on an intellectual level making a Scorpio Moon person feel deprived whereas a Pisces or Cancer Moon will happily join Scorp Moon in the deep end.

Compromise (another Libra favorite) is the best route to finding a satisfactory balance for most partners. Most of us know we have to devote time to learning more about our own relationship issues and discussing those with our SO. However we may not realize the importance of choosing to take time to have fun and recall why it was we got together in the first place. Think about it . . . :D
